Chapter 6 - Blood on the Docks

The midnight fog rolled off the Hudson River, blanketing Pier 42 in an eerie, ghostly shroud. The cavernous shipping warehouses loomed out of the darkness like monolithic beasts. Inside container crates stacked three stories high, Daniel’s elite tactical team moved in absolute silence, blending seamlessly with the shadows. Standing beside Daniel in a reinforced tactical vest, clutching an automatic rifle with professional familiarity, I felt completely alive for the first time in my life. The disguise of Emily McBride, the cheerful event planner, was gone, replaced by the lethal operative my father had secretly trained me to become.

A muffled explosion echoed from the north gate—a diversion planted by the Moretti syndicate. Seconds later, heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel outside our warehouse. Through my night-vision scope, I watched a dozen heavily armed mercenaries breach the perimeter, led by Salvatore Moretti himself. They thought they were walking into an undefended trap to seize control of Daniel's multi-million-dollar contraband network. They had no idea they were walking straight into an extermination zone. "Wait until they clear the second bulkhead," Daniel whispered into my earpiece, his breath warm against my ear as he pressed shoulder-to-shoulder with me behind a stack of steel containers.

"Marked three tangles on the left flank," I murmured back, my voice steady and icy cold. "I'll take the sniper on the gantry." Daniel glanced sideways at me, a flicker of dark amusement in his eyes. "You never cease to amaze me, Emily." When Salvatore Moretti raised his hand to signal the assault, Daniel gave the order. "Execute." The warehouse erupted into a deafening symphony of gunfire, flashbangs, and shattering glass. I pivoted around the steel crate, raising my rifle and squeezing the trigger with clinical precision. The sniper on the gantry crumpled instantly, tumbling over the railing. All around us, Daniel moved like a shadow of death, cutting down the Moretti enforcers with ruthless efficiency.

Within ten minutes, the skirmish was over. The surviving Moretti thugs knelt in surrender on the blood-stained concrete, their weapons kicked away into the darkness. Salvatore Moretti, bleeding from a graze on his shoulder, was dragged forward and forced to his knees before Daniel. Daniel stepped forward, his boots clicking rhythmically against the floor, looking down at his rival like an executioner surveying his condemned. "Tell your father," Daniel whispered, his voice echoing menacingly across the empty warehouse, "that New York belongs to the Ashfords. And anyone who tries to poison my table will end up buried beneath it." Satisfied that the threat was neutralized, Daniel turned his gaze to me, our eyes meeting across the smoky battlefield as the sirens wailed faintly in the distance.
