Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Betrayal

Confined to the luxurious guest suite on the third floor of the Ashford mansion, I paced restlessly across the Persian rug, my mind racing through escape routes and contingency plans. My covert communicator, hidden discreetly inside the lining of my leather handbag, hummed silently—a coded ping from my father's handlers demanding an immediate sitrep. I ignored it. Every second I spent locked in this fortress deepened the psychological warfare between Daniel and me. There was no denying the raw, magnetic pull that crackled between us whenever our eyes met, a dangerous distraction that threatened to cloud my mission and compromise my allegiance to the Marchetti syndicate.

A soft knock at the door interrupted my thoughts. Before I could answer, the heavy wood swung open, revealing Marcus carrying a silver tray with a steaming cup of Earl Grey tea and a secure encrypted tablet. "Boss wants you to see this," Marcus said gruffly, setting the tray on the marble coffee table before keeping his posture rigid. I approached cautiously, tapping the screen of the tablet. The display lit up with high-resolution security footage recovered from the mansion's private wine cellar. The video showed Katherine Porter meeting in secret with a high-ranking lieutenant from the rival Moretti family just forty-eight hours before the engagement party. They were exchanging a small glass vial containing the exact metallic-rimmed poison that had nearly ended Daniel's life.

"She planned to eliminate Daniel, frame the Marchetti syndicate for the assassination, and trigger a full-scale mafia war that would allow the Morettis to seize control of the Manhattan docks," Marcus explained, his voice devoid of emotion. "Daniel is currently having a private conversation with his fiancée in the west wing." My stomach twisted into knots. Katherine's betrayal was absolute, but what troubled me more was realization of how ruthless Daniel's retaliation would be. Without hesitating, I grabbed the tablet and rushed toward the door, pushing past Marcus before he could react. I couldn't let Daniel become a cold-blooded executioner—not because I cared about his soul, but because a bloody internal purge would destabilize the entire city.

Bursting into the west wing study, I froze. Daniel stood by the French balcony, holding a silver revolver while Katherine knelt on the floor before him, weeping hysterically and begging for mercy. The air reeked of terror and cordite. As Daniel slowly raised the weapon, locking his cold gaze onto Katherine's forehead, my instincts took over. "Daniel, stop!" I shouted, sprinting across the room and grabbing his wrist just as his finger tightened on the trigger. The gunshot rang out, shattering the glass ceiling above us in a deafening explosion of sound and fury. Daniel turned his head slowly, his eyes blazing with incandescent rage at my interference.
