Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass and the Crimson Tide

The shattered crystals of the champagne flute glittered across the pristine white marble like scattered diamonds, catching the amber glow of the crystal chandeliers overhead. For three agonizing seconds, the ballroom of the Ashford mansion was suspended in total, suffocating silence. Two hundred of New York’s most elite underworld figures, society socialites, and corrupt politicians stared in unmitigated shock. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, the adrenaline surging through my veins with the force of a tidal wave. My lips still tingled from the unexpected, electric impact of Daniel Ashford’s mouth. His dark eyes burned into mine, locked in an intense, dangerous interrogation that demanded answers I could never afford to give.

Across the room, Katherine Porter’s face had drained of all color, her manicured fingers digging into the fabric of her pale blue gown with murderous fury. Her gaze flicked from my face down to the spreading puddle of poisoned champagne on the floor, and in that fleeting instant, the mask slipped entirely. She knew I had seen her. She knew I had ruined her meticulously crafted assassination plot. Daniel shifted his gaze slowly, following Katherine’s panicked reaction. The gears in his razor-sharp mind were turning at breakneck speed; he was a man who survived in the mafia by reading micro-expressions and anticipating betrayal before it materialized. He knew no ordinary event planner would risk public humiliation, let alone a physical confrontation with New York’s most feared kingpin, without a profound, life-altering motive.

"Clear the room," Daniel’s voice cut through the heavy air like a razor blade. It wasn’t a shout; it was a low, commanding growl that brooked no argument. His elite security detail immediately sprang into action, ushering the stunned guests toward the grand double doors. Katherine attempted to linger, her voice trembling with forced indignation, but two towering bodyguards flanked her instantly, guiding her out with immovable force. As the heavy oak doors clicked shut, locking out the rest of the world, only Daniel, his most trusted lieutenant Marcus, and I remained under the glaring lights of the ballroom.

Daniel stepped closer, towering over me with an aura of brooding menace. His tailored tuxedo jacket was slightly rumpled from my sudden assault, his dark hair falling slightly across his forehead. "You have exactly ten seconds, Emily McBride," he murmured, his voice dangerously low, "to explain why you just kissed me in front of my entire engagement party, shattered my glass, and turned my world upside down. And your answer better keep you breathing." I swallowed hard, forcing my breathing to steady as I met his obsidian gaze head-on, knowing that my father, Vincent Marchetti, would kill me himself if he knew how close I had just come to blowing our entire operation—or worse, falling for the monster I was sent to destroy.
