Chapter 3 - The Interrogation in the Dark

The mahogany study of the Ashford mansion was heavy with the scent of aged leather, cedarwood, and impending doom. Daniel leaned against the edge of his heavy oak desk, his arms crossed over his broad chest, watching my every micro-movement with predatory intensity. Marcus stood by the reinforced steel door, acting as an unmovable sentinel. The glittering ballroom felt like a lifetime away; here, in the shadows, the true nature of New York's underworld revealed itself. "Let's try this again, Emily," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "Who hired you? Was it the Moretti family? Or did Vincent Marchetti send his little princess to play spy?"

My blood ran cold. Hearing my father's name spoken aloud by the most dangerous man in the city nearly shattered my composure. I forced my eyes to widen in genuine shock, channeling every bit of acting skill I had honed during my clandestine training. "Vincent Marchetti? Are you insane?" I shot back, injecting just enough righteous indignation into my voice. "I'm an event planner! I coordinate floral arrangements and seating charts! You're a paranoid megalomaniac looking for conspiracies where there are none!" Daniel pushed off the desk, closing the distance between us with terrifying speed. Before I could blink, his large hand gripped my chin, tilting my face upward so I had no choice but to look straight into his dark, fathomless eyes.

"You smell like expensive perfume and gunpowder residue," Daniel whispered, his face inches from mine, his breath warm against my cheek. "You didn't hesitate for a single millisecond when you crossed that room. You knew the glass was poisoned. You knew who put it there." He paused, his thumb tracing the line of my jaw with a disturbing mixture of violence and tenderness. "And yet, instead of exposing the plot to my guards, you kissed me. Why, Emily? Why protect the monster?" My heart raced wildly, not just from fear, but from the intoxicating proximity of his body. "Because," I whispered back, my voice trembling slightly, "if you died tonight, the resulting chaos would have destroyed everyone—including innocent people like me caught in the crossfire."

Daniel stared at me for a long, agonizing moment, searching my eyes for any trace of deceit. The silence stretched until it felt like a physical weight pressing down on my chest. Finally, a slow, dangerous smirk curved the corner of his lips. "Innocent," he murmured skeptically. "There is no innocence in this room, Emily. But I'll play your game for now. You're staying right here in this mansion under my direct supervision until I find out who tried to kill me." Before I could protest, he released my chin and turned to Marcus. "Lock down the perimeter. Find out how Katherine got her hands on that compound. And keep our new guest... very close."
