Chapter 5 - The Alliance of Enemies

The smoke from the stray gunshot drifted lazily toward the shattered skylight, casting eerie shadows across the opulent study. Daniel’s grip on the heavy silver revolver didn't slacken, but his dark eyes shifted from the smoking barrel to my face, blazing with a terrifying intensity. "You have a remarkable habit of inserting yourself where you don't belong, Emily," Daniel said, his voice deadly quiet. On the floor, Katherine scrambled backward, gasping for breath, utterly paralyzed by the brush with death before scurrying out of the room under the escort of two grim-faced guards. We were left alone once more in the echoing quiet of the estate.
I didn't back down, keeping my hand pressed firmly against his forearm to anchor him. "Killing her in cold blood inside your own home doesn't solve your problem, Daniel. It makes you a butcher, not a king," I argued, my voice ringing with authority that belonged to a mafia boss's daughter rather than a humble event planner. Daniel slowly lowered the gun, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. "You talk with a lot of authority for someone who supposedly arranges flowers for a living." He stepped closer, crowding me against the edge of the mahogany desk until I could feel the heat radiating from his broad frame. "Who are you really, Emily? Because every instinct tells me you are the most dangerous secret hidden in New York."

The proximity was intoxicating. The tension between us, forged in deceit and baptized in near-death, snapped with palpable friction. Without warning, Daniel's hand reached out, tangling his fingers in my hair and tilting my head back. His lips descended upon mine with a fierce, possessive hunger that stole the breath right out of my lungs. It wasn't the desperate, shocking kiss of the ballroom; this was calculated, deep, and utterly consuming. My hands found their way to the lapels of his jacket, pulling him closer as the walls I had spent years building around my heart crumbled into dust. Attachment was dangerous. Attachment to Daniel Ashford was absolute ruin. And yet, in that moment, I didn't care.
When we finally broke apart, both of us breathing heavily, Daniel pressed his forehead against mine, his voice dropping to a husky whisper. "The Morettis think they can move against me using Katherine as a pawn. They're preparing to hit our shipping hubs at midnight." He pulled back, his eyes hardening into flint. "If you really want to save New York from chaos, Emily, you're going to help me wage war against them. Side by side." I looked into his dark eyes and realized the horrifying truth: my mission for my father was over. I had crossed a line from which there was no return. I was no longer Vincent Marchetti's spy; I was Daniel Ashford's partner in crime.
