Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Marchetti Estate

Miles away from the glittering opulence of Manhattan, the Marchetti estate stood like a dark fortress shrouded by ancient weeping willows and iron security gates. Inside the sprawling oak-paneled study, my father, Vincent Marchetti, poured himself a glass of aged scotch while staring intently at the live surveillance feed streaming from the Ashford mansion. His weathered face was etched with cold calculation, the scars from decades of turf wars standing out starkly under the desk lamp. Beside him stood Marco, his ruthless enforcer, whose knuckles were perpetually bruised from enforcing our family's brutal code.

"She kissed him," Vincent muttered, his voice gravelly and dripping with dangerous disappointment. "My own flesh and blood, trained since childhood to be a ghost, a shadow, an invisible observer... and she throws herself into his arms in front of two hundred witnesses." Marco adjusted his collar, watching the paused video feed where my face was pressed against Daniel Ashford’s lips. "Boss, she saved his life. The glass was poisoned. If Daniel died tonight, total chaos would have erupted across the docks and the financial district before we had time to position our syndicates to swallow his territory." Vincent slammed his scotch glass onto the mahogany desk, liquid splashing over the rim. "I didn't send her there to save him! I sent her to watch him rot from the inside out so we could pick apart his empire piece by piece!"

The tension in the study thickened until it felt practically tangible. Vincent walked slowly to the tall French doors, looking out over the dark gardens where elite operatives trained in secret. He knew that Daniel Ashford was not a man who forgave easily or forgot slights against his honor. By making a public spectacle, I had thrust myself directly into the lion's den, drawing unwanted scrutiny not only from Daniel himself but from rival families who would smell weakness or conspiracy in the air. "If Daniel connects her to us," Vincent spoke softly, his tone chillingly detached, "she becomes a liability. And in our world, liabilities are eliminated. Prep the transport team. We may need to extract her—or silence her—sooner than anticipated."

Back in Manhattan, locked inside the private study of the Ashford mansion, I had no idea my father was already preparing for my execution. Standing mere inches from Daniel Ashford, I realized that surviving the next hour would require every ounce of cunning I possessed. Daniel circled me slowly, like a predator inspecting a trapped bird, his dark eyes narrowing as he pieced together the fragments of the puzzle. "You aren't just an event planner from the agency," Daniel stated, his tone flat, laced with lethal certainty. "No planner moves with that kind of tactical precision. No planner intercepts a poisoned glass with a calculated distraction." My pulse spiked, but I forced my features into a mask of innocent confusion. The game had truly begun, and there was no turning back.
