Chapter 1 - The Ash beneath the Bloodied ShoesThe cold, metallic scent of ozone and coagulated blood hung heavy in the narrow hallway outside my South Philadelphia apartment.

My name is Donna Nora Elizabeth Bennett-Moretti. At thirty-two, I had spent ten years as a senior trauma ER nurse at Mercy Harbor Medical Center in Philadelphia. I was a woman who lived by strict, unwavering rules: monitor the vitals, clear the airway, never ask questions about the bullet holes, and leave the violence behind when the clock struck 7:00 A.M.

Yet standing in my doorway, staring down at two dark sedans idling beneath the streetlights, my dark hazel eyes burned with an apocalyptic, diamond-hard realization.

Inside the white box on my kitchen table rested the silver-trimmed black fountain pen—a custom instrument carrying the engraved crest of the Moretti Heritage & Defense Trust.

The dying stranger whose life I had saved twenty-four hours earlier by giving my own O-negative blood was thirty-six-year-old Don Gabriel Moretti—the supreme Don of the East Coast Syndicate, a billionaire whose word commanded maritime logistics, private defense fleets, and commercial real estate across Philadelphia, New York, and Boston.

And the man who had drawn my blood under the forged badge of "Aaron Pike" was actually thirty-eight-year-old Marcus Vance—Lieutenant Colonel of Vance Tactical Security and Gabriel’s chief intelligence director.

BOOM!

The heavy double lock of my apartment door rattled as a heavy, firm knock echoed through the room.

I didn't run. I pulled my dark coat around my shoulders, opened the door to the chain lock, and looked directly into the storm-gray eyes of the man standing in the hallway.

He stood six-foot-four, built like a wall of solid granite, his broad chest wrapped in a dark charcoal bespoke suit beneath a heavy black wool overcoat. His face was carved with a razor-sharp jawline, a thin surgical dressing covering the bullet wound on his collarbone, his posture rigid with an untouchable, sovereign authority.

Gabriel Moretti.

Beside him stood Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance and Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, flanked by four armed tactical operators in dark suits.

"Nora," Gabriel rasped out, his deep baritone dropping into a subsonic register of absolute authority that made the doorframe vibrate. His dark brown, almost black eyes swept over my pale face, my worn medical scrubs beneath my coat, and my trembling hands. "Unlock the door."

"You put a fake technician in my hospital to take my blood, Mr. Moretti," I spoke flatly, my silver voice cutting through the chilly hall like a drawn blade. "And now you bring four armed men to my home."

Gabriel didn't hesitate. He took a single step forward, reaching out with a broad, calloused hand to gently touch the chain lock.

"I brought four men to make sure the family who shot me doesn't take the woman who saved my life," Gabriel swore, his dark eyes locked onto mine with pure, humble reverence and absolute, protective rage. "Your name was leaked from the hospital registry an hour ago, Nora. My enemies know your blood is inside my veins. Tonight... you come with me."
