Chapter 5 - The Beggar in the CellThree months after the arrests at the penthouse, the final criminal sentencing hearing took place inside Courtroom 4B of the United States District Court in downtown Seattle.

The room was packed with two hundred journalists, federal agents, corporate leaders, and legal observers.

Ethan Vance sat at the defense table wearing a dark orange federal inmate jumpsuit, his hands restrained by heavy steel waist chains. His former arrogant composure was completely gone, replaced by a hollow, broken, sunken appearance. His hair was shaved short, his cheeks pale, his eyes red and bloodshot with profound, devastating exhaustion.

Beside him sat Vanessa, wearing a matching orange jumpsuit, her head bowed in total, groveling defeat, weeping softly into her paper towels.

The honorable Judge Marcus Vance presided over the bench, adjusting his glasses as he reviewed the thick federal sentencing file before him.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Vance declared, his baritone echoing through the silent courtroom like a rolling wave of thunder, "you used your position as a corporate leader to launder seventy million dollars for an international organized crime syndicate. When your wife discovered your crimes, you executed a brutal, cowardly physical assault, leaving her in a freezing alley while filming her suffering."

Ethan squeezed his eyes shut, a low, agonizing groan breaking from his throat.

"You are a predator who hid behind wealth and social status," Judge Vance continued flatly.

SLAM!

The heavy wooden gavel struck the block with a sharp, thunderous crash.

ETHAN VANCE: Sentenced to thirty-five years in a federal maximum-security penitentiary without the possibility of early parole, alongside total financial forfeiture of all corporate assets.

VANESSA RUSSO: Sentenced to fifteen years in federal custody for conspiracy, accessory to attempted murder, and evidence tampering.

As federal marshals stood up to escort Ethan toward the side holding cell in chains, he turned his head frantically, looking back toward the gallery where I sat.

He saw me.

I didn't wear a medical brace or hide my face.

I stood tall, straight, and sovereign in my midnight-blue tailored suit, flanked by Bridget Colton and Detective Voss, my hazel eyes holding his with a cold, absolute victory that shattered the last lingering piece of his pride.

Ethan opened his mouth, letting out a desperate, groveling sob, reaching his chained hands toward me. "Tessa...! Please...! Forgive me...!"

I didn't answer him.

I slowly turned my back on him, walking out through the high brass doors of the courtroom into the bright spring sunlight, leaving him to spend the next thirty-five years in dark, cold silence.
