Chapter 1 - The Ash beneath the Cracked OakThe sharp scent of spilt bourbon, stale beer, and blood hung heavy in the air of Marshall's Bar. Glass shards from broken amber bottles dug into my back through the wet fabric of my torn waitress vest, but I was too terrified to move.

Twenty-four-year-old Clara Reyes lay shivering on the ruined table, clutching my bruised ribs as my breath came in ragged, wheezing gasps.
Twenty-nine-year-old Victor Marshall walked across the cracked pine floorboards. At six-foot-four, the undisputed Don of the South Texas Syndicate moved with the silent, predatory grace of a panther. His broad shoulders were squared beneath a dark bespoke jacket, his white shirt open at the collar, revealing dark, intricate tattoos snaking up his throat to his sharp jawline. A thin scar sliced through his left eyebrow, making his storm-gray eyes look like frozen steel.
The five men who had thrown me onto the table stood frozen. Their leader—a heavy-set mercenary named Garrick—held his smartphone mid-air, but his smirk was fast disintegrating into pure, unadulterated panic.
"I asked you a question," Victor said, his voice dropping into a low, subsonic baritone that vibrated through the floorboards under Garrick's boots. "Who sent you into my bar?"
Garrick swallowed hard, trying to reassert his bravado. "We were just having some fun with the help, Marshall. Your bartender said she was open for business—"
BOOM!
Before Garrick could finish his sentence, Victor's right hand lashed out like a lightning strike!
His massive, calloused palm clamped around Garrick's throat, lifting the two-hundred-pound man two inches off the floorboards before slamming him flat against the brick pillar behind the bar!
The remaining four men reached beneath their denim jackets, but before their fingers could touch leather, the metallic click of six suppressed firearms echoed through the room.
Stepping out from the shadowed corners of the bar were six tactical operators led by Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance, head of Vance Security.
"Don't move," Marcus warned flatly, his weapon trained on the leader's chest.
Victor didn't look at the tactical team. His cold gray eyes remained locked onto Garrick's bulging eyes, his fingers tightening around the man's windpipe until Garrick's face turned a mottled purple.
"You have a snake tattoo on your left wrist, Garrick," Victor whispered, every word falling like an iron block into the quiet room. "The emblem of the Mendoza Cartel. My late father's rival across the border. You didn't come here for beer or a waitress. You came here because Carlos Mendoza paid you fifty thousand dollars to test whether Victor Marshall still protects the women under his roof."
Garrick clawed uselessly at Victor's hand, choking out raspy pleas. "M-Mendoza... said... you were soft... since Isabel left..."
Victor's jaw locked into solid granite. Seven years ago, his younger sister Isabel had been attacked because he arrived three minutes too late. The ghost of her haunting question—Where were you?—had burned in his chest every single day since.
Victor dragged Garrick across the floor, tossing him like a ragdoll at Marcus Vance's feet.
Then he turned around.

The terrifying Mafia Don who commanded the Texas border vanished. In his place stood a man consumed by a deep, protective, unshakeable devotion. He knelt on the floorboards beside the broken table, his broad, warm hands gently lifting me out of the shattered glass into his arms.
"I've got you, Clara," Victor swore into my damp hair, his hands trembling as he wrapped his heavy wool coat around my shoulders, cradling my soft curves against his solid chest. "You are under my protection now. And tonight... I tear Mendoza's empire to the ground."
