Chapter 1 - The File on the MonitorThe quiet ICU room at St. Jude Memorial Hospital fell into a suffocating, absolute silence as the video file initialized on Bridget Colton’s laptop screen.

Detective Cole Voss stood beside my bed, his dark coat draped over his arm, his hands resting on his leather belt as his sharp, observant eyes fixed on the illuminated monitor. Across the room, my lead attorney, Bridget, clicked through the second encrypted directory on the USB drive.
The screen didn't display financial ledgers or tax documents.
It displayed a high-definition video feed captured six months ago from a hidden surveillance lens installed inside the master office of Vance International Logistics—the multi-million-dollar maritime shipping conglomerate owned by my husband, Ethan Vance.
On the screen, Ethan sat behind his wide mahogany desk, wearing a charcoal suit, a dark smile curving his lips.
Sitting across from him wasn't his mistress, Vanessa.
It was Victor Moretti—a high-ranking syndicate figure from Chicago who was currently under active federal indictment for international money laundering, predatory extortion, and human trafficking.
On the desk between them sat three heavy metal briefcase containers packed tight with stacks of hundred-dollar bills, alongside a digital hard drive containing encrypted maritime shipping manifests.
"The secondary cargo routes through the Boston docks are cleared, Victor," Ethan’s voice echoed cleanly from the laptop speakers, filled with a smooth, arrogant confidence. "My wife, Tessa, manages the primary compliance logs. She thinks these manifests are routine agricultural shipments. She signs every document without asking a single question."
Victor Moretti let out a dark, raspy chuckle on the video. "And if she ever checks the secondary customs clearance codes, Ethan?"
Ethan’s smile turned ice-cold. "She won't. But if she ever becomes a problem... I'll make sure she's declared mentally unfit to testify in any court in North America."
Detective Cole Voss took a slow, sharp breath, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched along his cheek. "My God..."
"He didn't just assault me in that alley because I discovered his affair with Vanessa, Detective," I spoke. My voice was a low, raspy baritone, my throat raw from four days of hospital care, my chest bruised, but my hazel eyes holding an unshakeable, terrifying heat. "He did it because two weeks ago, I accessed the secondary customs server and realized he was using my corporate signature to launder seventy million dollars for Victor Moretti."
Bridget clicked on a second folder within the USB drive, pulling up certified bank wire transfers, offshore shell company deeds in Grand Cayman, and a recorded audio call between Ethan and Vanessa from three weeks ago.
On the audio recording, Vanessa’s voice came through crystal clear:
"Ethan, she's starting to look at the old customs logs! If she finds out you framed her for the Moretti shipments, she'll go to the federal prosecutor!"
"She's not going anywhere, Vanessa," Ethan’s voice answered coldly. "We'll provoke an argument at the house, film her crying, throw her into the alley, and tell the police she suffered a psychotic break over our affair. By the time she recovers... her name will be signed on the federal confession documents."
Detective Voss turned around slowly, looking down at me lying in the hospital bed—taking in my broken wrist, the heavy bandages wrapped around my ribs, and the quiet, unyielding fury in my eyes.

"Tessa," Detective Voss spoke, his voice dropping into a low, grave register, "this isn't just a domestic violence case anymore. This is a high-level federal RICO conspiracy."
"Then execute the warrants, Detective," I commanded softly. "And show my husband what happens when he frames the wrong woman."
