Chapter 6: The Ultimate Trap

I stood near the marble pillars of the bank lobby as Vanessa was led out in handcuffs, her expensive designer clothes rumpled, her face contorted in furious disbelief as she caught sight of me standing by the security desk. She broke away from the marshals for a split second, lunging toward me with a venomous snarl. "You ruined everything, Evelyn! He was going to give it all to me!" I didn't flinch or raise my voice; I simply looked down at her with calm, absolute sovereignty. "You chose to play a dangerous game with a desperate man, Vanessa," I replied evenly. "You thought you were the mastermind pulling the strings, but you were just another pawn in a system you couldn't control." The marshals pulled her back, guiding her toward the squad cars waiting outside in the crisp Chicago sunlight. Watching her disappear into the back of the cruiser, the last heavy chain binding my soul to my past finally shattered. I wasn't the terrified, tied-up housewife cowering in a dark guest room anymore; I was the architect of my own liberation, standing tall amidst the ruins of the empire that had tried to bury me.
