Chapter 1: The Midnight Intruder and the Flash Drive

I scrambled backward, staring at the woman who had helped destroy my twelve-year marriage, panting as I demanded to know what madness had brought her here. Whispering urgently, Vanessa explained that Daniel had passed out downstairs after consuming half a bottle of scotch, and she couldn't risk the front security cameras. Then, reaching into her torn jacket, she pressed three items into my trembling hands: my passport, a burner smartphone pre-loaded with emergency contacts, and a sleek black flash drive. "I copied his master hard drive," she breathed, her eyes darting nervously toward the hallway. When I asked why she would betray the man she had been sleeping with for over a year, her expression hardened into something chillingly calculated: "Because you don’t know what Daniel really is." She claimed the drive contained offshore accounts, hidden corporate fraud, and enough criminal evidence to put him behind bars for decades. Desperate to escape the house of horrors, I believed her, allowing her to smuggle me out into the pre-dawn mist as we fled toward a rundown roadside motel on the interstate. But while Vanessa stepped into the bathroom to wash the blood and mud from her skin, a nagging intuition compelled me to plug the flash drive into my laptop, initiating a chain of discoveries that would shatter the fragile illusion of my rescue and drag me into a far darker conspiracy.
