Chapter 4: The Counter-Strategy

"You're taking an incredible gamble," I said calmly, leaning back in my chair while meeting Vanessa’s gaze without flinching. "If Daniel is knee-deep in syndicate debt, what makes you think he’s going to let you walk away with twenty million dollars? Men like him don't share the spoils; they eliminate the loose ends once the transition is complete." Vanessa’s confident facade faltered for a fraction of a second—just enough for me to see the flicker of genuine paranoia behind her eyes. She knew as well as I did that Daniel was a sociopath who viewed human beings as disposable tools. Capitalizing on that microscopic crack in her armor, I leaned forward. "Instead of acting as Daniel’s patsy, why don't we rewrite the ownership transfer right now? The encryption keys to those offshore accounts are tied to the master administrator profile on that flash drive. With my legal signature as his wife, I can freeze his corporate registry before the future date arrives—or I can hand the unedited, uncompromised drive directly to my brother, who happens to be a senior investigator with the federal securities fraud division."

The color drained instantly from Vanessa’s face. She hadn't anticipated that I would call her bluff or possess federal law enforcement connections. The fragile alliance we had forged in the dark bedroom fractured completely, and in that tense standoff, we both realized that whoever reached out to the authorities first would dictate who survived the impending storm.
