Chapter 2: The Hidden Folder and the Future Date

My stomach tightened into a hard, painful knot. I double-clicked the folder and opened the primary document. Inside were property deeds, commercial real estate holdings across downtown Chicago, multi-million-dollar stock portfolios, and primary bank routing numbers—all bearing Daniel’s legal signature, but transferring complete, unencumbered ownership of his entire corporate empire directly into Vanessa’s personal name. Weeks before I had ever discovered their romantic affair, millions of dollars in marital assets had apparently been legally signed away to the woman standing in our guest bedroom. I stared at the screen in mounting horror. Why hadn’t she mentioned this massive windfall? Why would a mistress who supposedly hated Daniel’s cruelty suddenly possess absolute control over his wealth?
Then my eyes dropped to the metadata timestamp at the bottom of the final document, and my blood turned to ice water. The signature date on the asset transfer agreement was stamped for three days from now. That wasn’t possible. A legal document cannot be executed with a future date unless it is part of a pending, pre-arranged transaction—or unless whatever Daniel and Vanessa had jointly planned wasn't finished yet. A sudden, terrifying hypothesis flashed through my mind: what if their bitter workplace rivalry and torrid affair were a carefully staged facade? What if the domestic abuse, the locked guest room, and the dramatic midnight rescue were all part of an elaborate theatrical production designed to make me flee, leaving Daniel legally abandoned and allowing Vanessa to inherit the spoils of a staged corporate bankruptcy? Before I could process the full, horrifying scope of the deception, the bathroom shower abruptly stopped running. I slammed the laptop lid shut just as the latch clicked and Vanessa stepped out into the room, her towel wrapped around her hair, her eyes locking instantly onto the flash drive still clutched in my frozen fingers.
