Chapter 7 - The Dawn We DeservedSix months later.

The sun was setting over the Chicago skyline, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and violet.

Inside the grand ballroom of our new home, soft classical music played in the background. But the most important sound in the world was the soft, gurgling coo of a baby girl resting peacefully in her bassinet.

Little Maya Caldwell—no, Maya Thorne—had her mother’s bright eyes and her father’s stubborn resilience.

I stood by the balcony doors, watching Julian walk across the lawn carrying our daughter in his arms, his face lit up with a tender, goofy smile that the ruthless billionaire of Chicago would never let anyone else see.

My little brother, Jacob, was currently laughing with our closest friends by the terrace, finally back in college on a full scholarship funded by the Thorne Foundation, with a future as bright as the morning sun.

The sound of that leather belt slicing through the air in the Grand Harrison Hotel used to be a nightmare that haunted my sleep.

Now, looking out at the family I had fought so hard to protect, I realized that terrible night hadn't broken me. It had simply cleared away the wreckage, making room for a love so deep, a strength so fierce, and a happiness so absolute that no shadow could ever touch it again.

Julian walked back into the room, gently placing sleeping Maya into her crib before coming up behind me, wrapping his strong arms securely around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.

“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Thorne,” he whispered warmly against my ear.

I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, resting my hands over his.

“I was just thinking,” I murmured, turning my head to kiss his cheek, “that we finally got our happy ending.”

“Not an ending, Claire,” Julian corrected, his lips curving into a soft, loving smile as he pulled me closer. “Just the beginning.”
