Chapter 5 - The SanctuaryTwo hours later, I walked out of the downtown precinct not through the front doors surrounded swarming reporters, but through a private underground parking garage, escorted by four armed private security guards.

Waiting by the open door of a sleek, armored Maybach was Julian Thorne.
“Where is Jacob?” I asked immediately, panic rising in my chest as I stopped in my tracks.
“Your brother has already been released,” Julian assured me smoothly, opening the car door for me. “He’s currently being driven to a secure medical facility where top-tier specialists are treating his concussion. He’s safe, Claire. You have my word.”
Relief so profound washed over me that my knees buckled. Julian caught my elbow instantly, lifting me effortlessly into the plush leather interior of the vehicle before sliding in beside me.
The car glided silently out of the garage, merging into the rainy Chicago traffic.
“Where are we going?” I asked, looking out the tinted window as the familiar downtown skyscrapers blurred past.
“My estate on the North Shore,” Julian replied, pulling a tablet from his briefcase and reviewing a file. “It’s gated, secure, and staffed by medical professionals who will ensure you and your baby get the care you’ve been denied.”
“I can’t accept this,” I said, shaking my head and pulling back. “You’ve already saved my brother, you destroyed Ethan’s empire… I don't even know you, Mr. Thorne. Why are you doing all of this?”
Julian looked up from his tablet. He set the device aside, turned toward me, and looked into my eyes with an expression so raw and vulnerable it shocked me.
“Because five years ago, Claire, I watched from afar as a brilliant, radiant architectural student poured her heart into a project that was stolen from her,” Julian said quietly. “I watched her get trapped by a monster she thought loved her. And I vowed that if I ever got the chance to tear his world down and give you back what was stolen, I wouldn't hesitate for a single second.”
A lump formed in my throat. For the first time in three years, I didn't feel small. I didn't feel terrified.
When the Maybach finally passed through the towering wrought-iron gates of Julian’s sprawling lakefront estate, it felt less like entering a fortress and more like stepping into a safe harbor after a violent storm.
For the next two weeks, the estate became my sanctuary.

Jacob recovered quickly in the guest wing, surrounded by comforts we had only ever dreamed of. And under the care of a private obstetrician, my health—and my baby’s health—improved dramatically.
And Julian… Julian was there every evening. Not as a savior demanding gratitude, but as a quiet, steady presence who sat with me by the fireplace, listened to my fears, and slowly helped me rebuild the shattered pieces of my soul.
