Chapter 1 - The Ash beneath the Hospital GlassThe dark, heavy rain of Boston’s worst November storm hammered relentlessly against the floor-to-ceiling bulletproof windows of the medical wing.

Inside the vast room, the sterile scent of antiseptic, warm oxygen, and cold lavender was crushed by the sudden, suffocating atmosphere of pure, raw authority. The steady, electronic pulse of heart monitors began to race in rapid, rhythmic staccatos:
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!
My heart hammered against my ribs with terrifying force. My twenty-six-year-old body went completely rigid as five long, heavily scarred, muscle-bound fingers locked around my slender wrist like a band of forged titanium.
Standing six-foot-four beneath the pristine white hospital sheets, his dark hair disheveled, his broad, ink-covered chest heaving with deep, ragged gasps of air, was Don Dominic Vale.
The thirty-eight-year-old titan of Boston’s underground empire—a man whose name made hardened corporate raiders, corrupt politicians, and rival syndicate bosses tremble in fear—had opened his eyes. His storm-gray gaze, sharp as obsidian glass and cold as midwinter ice, locked straight onto mine.
"Don't..." Dominic rasped out, his voice scraping up through his throat like grinding iron, broken by eighty-nine days of total silence.
"Dominic...?" I whispered, my voice trembling violently as three armed guards pulled their sidearms, rushing into the suite with heavy, synchronized footsteps.
"Don't let her leave," Dominic ordered, his gray eyes burning through mine with an unshakeable, terrifying intensity that dropped the room’s ambient temperature to absolute zero.
The three guards froze in their tracks.
The chief of his private security detail, Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance, lowered his sidearm slowly, looking from the awakened Don to me—a twenty-six-year-old live-in maid in a faded cotton dress with calloused hands.
"Boss..." Marcus stammered, his gravelly voice tight with shock. "You've been in a coma for eighty-nine days... The doctors said—"
"I heard her," Dominic grunted, his grip on my wrist tightening just enough to anchor me to his side without causing pain. He slowly pulled himself up against the pillows, his broad, tattooed shoulders squaring as if he hadn't spent three months bleeding out from four gunshot wounds and a fractured skull. "I heard every single chapter of The Art of War. I heard every word she whispered when the rest of you were arguing over my territory in the hallway."
My jaw dropped. Tears of sheer, overwhelming shock filled my dark hazel eyes.
For eighty-nine nights, while the mansion whispered that he was a corpse waiting to be buried, I had sat beside his bed, wiping his forehead with warm water, reading strategy manuals, and begging him to stay.
Dominic slowly turned his head toward Marcus Vance, his gray eyes darkening into an apocalyptic, predatory fire.
"Who authorized my brother, Julian Vale, to access my executive accounts while I lay here?" Dominic demanded, his baritone dropping into a subsonic rumble that vibrated through the floorboards under my worn sneakers.
"Julian... Julian brought court-appointed conservatorship papers yesterday morning, Don Vale," Marcus revealed, stepping forward nervously. "He claims he is liquidating the Vale Maritime Trust tomorrow at ten o'clock."
Dominic offered a soft, dangerous, breathtaking smirk.
He looked back at me, his thumb gently caressing the pulse point on my wrist.
"Nora," Dominic spoke softly, his voice an iron oath that shook my very soul.
"Yes, Mr. Vale...?"
"Go to my library. Behind the third edition of Sun Tzu's manuscripts is a silver key. Bring it to me."
May you like
He pulled me closer until his warm breath brushed against my temple.
"Tonight... you stop cleaning my floors, Nora. Tonight, you help me burn my enemies to ash."
