Chapter 1 - The Ash beneath the Forbidden RoomThe quiet, rhythmic hiss of the mechanical ventilator inside the medical suite of the Moretti Estate hit with hydraulic pressure, dropping the room's temperature to absolute zero.

My name is Clara Bennett. At twenty-eight, I worked twelve-hour shifts scrubbing marble floors, laundering silk linens, and surviving on $140 a week to keep my three-year-old daughter, Mia, warm. Eighteen months ago, my life had been shattered when a violent assault tore away my home, leaving me running from shadows, refusing charity, and protecting my daughter at all costs.
Yet standing in the doorway of the forbidden second-floor medical suite, my heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped bird.
Lying in the center of the white, machine-filled room was thirty-eight-year-old Lorenzo Moretti—the undisputed Don of the Moretti Syndicate. For forty-nine days, after a treacherous ambush orchestrated by his corrupt uncle, Dante Moretti, Lorenzo had lain in an irreversible coma, a shadow of the titan whose name once commanded fear across New York's shipping berths and corporate trusts.
And sitting on a high wooden chair dragged right beside his bed, clutching his broad, calloused hand between her tiny palms, was my three-year-old daughter, Mia.
"Don't worry, I'll stay until you're not scared," Mia whispered softly, her sweet, wobbly voice echoing in the quiet room. She leaned closer, pressing her small forehead gently against his cheek, humming You Are My Sunshine.
Nurse Elena Whitmore stood frozen beside the cardiac monitor, her hands trembling as the flatline numbers suddenly spiked:
Sixty-two. Sixty-eight. Seventy-four. Eighty-two!
Before Clara could step forward to grab Mia, Lorenzo Moretti’s heavy, dark eyelashes fluttered.
Slowly, agonizingly, his deep storm-gray eyes—eyes that had been closed for forty-nine days—opened completely, locking onto little Mia’s face with a profound, soul-shattering clarity.
His long, scarred fingers twitched, curling gently around Mia’s tiny hand.
"M-Mia..." a dry, raspy whisper tore from Lorenzo’s throat.
Clara gasped, pulling Mia into her arms. "Mia! Come here, baby!"
BOOM!
The heavy oak doors of the medical suite were thrown open with a violent impact!
Stepping into the room, flanked by four armed syndicate enforcers, was fifty-eight-year-old Dante Moretti—Lorenzo's treacherous uncle.
Dante’s eyes shifted from his awakened nephew to Clara and Mia. A dark, terrifying smile curved his lips. He signaled his guards, who immediately grabbed Clara and Mia, dragging them out of the room down the service stairs.
They shoved Clara and Mia into a dark, freezing pantry in the basement, locking the heavy iron bolt with a sharp CLACK.

Dante leaned against the wooden door slat, his voice dripping with poisonous satisfaction through the keyhole:
"Your little girl just signed a death sentence, Clara," Dante sneered. "Hers... or mine."
