Chapter 6 - The Final ReckoningThree weeks later, the federal indictment against Ethan Caldwell went public, sending shockwaves through the corporate and political elite of Chicago.

Stripped of his wealth, abandoned by his corrupt political allies, and facing overwhelming evidence of financial fraud, domestic abuse, and attempted murder, Ethan’s legal defense collapsed completely. Marcus Vance had fled the country to avoid federal prosecution, leaving Ethan completely isolated in the Lake County detention center.
On a crisp autumn morning, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of Julian’s study, looking out over the crashing waves of Lake Michigan, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater and feeling stronger than I had in years.
The double doors opened, and Julian walked in, holding a thick manila envelope.
“It’s done,” Julian said quietly, walking up beside me.
I turned, looking at him. “What is?”
“Ethan’s trial was waived this morning. He took a plea deal to avoid a federal life sentence,” Julian explained, handing me the envelope. “Twenty years in a federal penitentiary in Colorado. No parole for fifteen.”
I opened the envelope with trembling fingers. Inside was the finalized decree of absolute divorce, signed by a federal judge, along with complete forfeiture of all Caldwell assets transferred directly into a newly established trust fund bearing my name and my unborn daughter’s name.
“It’s over,” I whispered, a single tear escaping my eye, but this time, it was a tear of pure, unadulterated liberation.
“It’s just beginning,” Julian corrected gently.
He reached out, taking the papers from my hands and setting them aside. Then, slowly, he dropped to one knee on the hardwood floor right in front of me.
My breath caught in my throat.
“Julian…” I gasped.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, snapping it open to reveal a breathtaking, flawless diamond ring that caught the morning sunlight like a star.
“I didn't save you to be your savior, Claire,” Julian said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with a raw devotion that made my heart race. “I saved you because from the moment I first saw you, I knew you were the only light in my dark world. Marry me, Claire. Let me spend the rest of my life proving to you what true love is supposed to feel like.”
I looked down into his brilliant blue eyes, seeing my entire future reflected in them—safe, cherished, and free.

I threw my arms around his neck, pulling him up into a fierce, passionate embrace as I laughed through my tears.
“Yes,” I whispered against his lips. “Yes, Julian. A thousand times yes.”
