Chapter 2 - The Fall of the TitanThe gunshot echoed down the long, carpeted hallways of the Grand Harrison Hotel, followed instantly by the blaring shriek of the building's emergency smoke and security alarms.

Inside the suite, a chaotic struggle for survival erupted.
Ethan cursed furiously, swinging the heavy butt of the Glock toward Jacob’s head. My brother ducked just in time, but the blow grazed his temple, drawing a fresh line of crimson down his cheek. They crashed into the mahogany coffee table, splintering wood beneath their weight as they rolled across the ruined floor.
“Jacob! Get away from him!” I screamed, my hands flying to my mouth as I scrambled backward, desperately trying to find safety near the heavy foyer doors.
Ethan managed to shove Jacob off, scrambling on his hands and knees toward where the pistol had skidded across the smooth marble. His fingers grazed the cold steel just as Jacob lunged again, kicking the weapon away with a sharp, echoing clatter that sent it sliding deep under the velvet sofa.
Dealt a devastating blow, Ethan spun around, his face purple with rage, and threw a punch that caught Jacob square in the jaw, sending my brother stumbling back against the wall.
“You think you can ruin my life?” Ethan snarled, lunging for Jacob’s throat with both hands. “I built this empire! I am untouchable!”
“You’re nothing,” Jacob choked out, his fingers digging desperately into Ethan’s wrists, trying to pry the larger man’s hands away from his windpipe. “You’re a coward who beats pregnant women!”
Seeing my brother losing air, something inside me snapped. The fear that had paralyzed me for three long years—the constant walking on eggshells, the bruises hidden beneath long sleeves, the terrifying gaslighting—evaporated into pure, unadulterated fury.
I spotted the heavy silver ice bucket sitting on the intact credenza near the minibar.
Without a second thought, I grabbed it by the handles, surged forward with all the adrenaline of a mother protecting her young, and brought the heavy metal bucket down with bone-cracking force against the back of Ethan’s head.
A dull, heavy thud echoed through the room.
Ethan froze instantly. His eyes rolled back into his head, his grip on Jacob’s throat slackening, and like a felled oak tree, he collapsed forward onto the ruined carpet, completely unconscious.
Silence descended upon the suite, broken only by the distant wailing of sirens outside and the ragged, heavy breathing of my brother and me.
Jacob slid down the wallpaper, coughing violently, clutching his bruised neck. I dropped the ice bucket, my legs finally giving out as I sank to my knees beside him, tears streaming freely down my face.
“Jacob… oh God, Jacob, are you okay?” I sobbed, frantically checking his face, his arms, making sure he was still breathing.
“I’m… I’m fine, Claire,” Jacob wheezed, breaking into a coughing fit before offering me a weak, bloody grin. “Damn, sis… you’ve got a hell of a swing.”

I laughed hysterically through my tears, wrapping my arms around his neck as we clung to each other amidst the wreckage. But the relief was short-lived. Outside the suite doors, heavy, rapid footsteps echoed down the corridor, accompanied by shouting voices and the unmistakable clatter of tactical gear.
Hotel security had arrived. And the police were right behind them.
