Chapter 4 - The Gala of KingsThree weeks after the incident at the grocery store, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was bathed in the warm, glittering light of dozens of crystal chandeliers.

The annual Chicago Children's Medical Gala was the most prestigious high-society event of the year, attended by supreme court justices, senators, billionaire developers, and the city's oldest elite families.
The public scandal surrounding Nathan Vance’s downfall had reached a fever pitch. Stripped of his wealth, facing federal embezzlement charges, and abandoned by Chloe the moment his money vanished, Nathan was ruined.
Yet tonight, in a desperate, delusional attempt to beg the city's elite for financial backing, Nathan had used his remaining secondary club pass to slip into the gala, wearing a rumpled, borrowed tuxedo, his face gaunt, his eyes bloodshot and frantic.
He stood near the champagne bar, clutching a glass with shaking fingers, trying to catch the eye of former business associates who deliberately turned their backs on him.
Suddenly, the heavy double brass doors at the grand entrance of the ballroom were thrown open.
A hushed, reverent silence swept through the five hundred guests.
Stepping into the ballroom, flanked by six broad-shouldered security operators in immaculate dark suits, was Adrian Moretti.
Adrian looked magnificent in a bespoke black tuxedo, his dark hair brushed back smoothly, his broad six-foot-three frame radiating an unshakeable, sovereign authority that commanded the entire room.
And resting comfortably on his arm, looking radiant, magnificent, and completely unbroken, was me.
I wore a breathtaking, custom floor-length silk gown in deep emerald green that celebrated every curve of my six-month pregnant figure. My dark hair fell in glossy waves over my shoulders, and around my neck rested a flawless fifty-carat diamond necklace from the Moretti vault that caught the light in brilliant, blinding waves.
Nathan stared at us from the champagne bar, his glass slipping from his trembling fingers, crashing onto the marble floorboards where it shattered into a hundred sparkling shards.
"Claire...?" Nathan whispered rasply, his eyes bulging out of his head.
I didn't look like the pale, exhausted girl holding a seventeen-dollar bank account in a grocery store aisle. I walked with the quiet, royal grace of a queen who owned the city.
Adrian looked down at me, his storm-gray eyes holding a depth of profound, fierce love that lit up his severe features. He gently took my hand, kissing my knuckles in front of every camera lens in the room.
"You look breathtaking, my queen," Adrian whispered softly.
"I feel safe with you, Adrian," I answered, smiling up into his face with complete, unshakeable trust.
At that moment, the President of the Chicago Medical Board stepped up to the main stage microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the President announced proudly, "we are honored tonight to present our highest philanthropic award to the primary donor of our new fifty-million-dollar Pediatric Wing... Mrs. Claire Moretti!"
The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
