Chapter 2 - The Sanctuary in Lake ForestThe dark armored Maybach glided silently through the high iron gates of the Moretti Estate in Lake Forest—an exclusive, hundred-acre sanctuary surrounded by ancient oak trees, high stone walls, and elite private security networks.

Inside the quiet rear cabin of the vehicle, the air was warm and smelled of expensive leather and cedarwood. I sat in the plush leather seat, my hands resting over my bump, staring out at the manicured grounds while the adrenaline of the grocery store confrontation slowly ebbed away, leaving behind a deep, aching exhaustion.

Beside me, Adrian sat with his long legs crossed, reviewing a series of financial documents on a leather-bound tablet. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling up his crisp white sleeves to reveal the dark, intricate tattoos that crept up his forearms—symbols of his family’s long, brutal history in the European and American underworld.

He set the tablet aside, turning his storm-gray eyes toward me.

"You're quiet, Claire," Adrian noted gently, his baritone thick with unspoken concern.

I let out a soft, trembling breath, looking down at my simple cotton dress. "I spent five months hiding in that tiny apartment, Adrian. I tried so hard to do everything on my own. I didn't want anyone to think I married you for protection... or for money."

Six months ago, when my world shattered after catching Nathan in bed with Chloe, I had walked away from his lavish lifestyle with nothing but my personal clothes. I had taken a job at a small bakery, renting a cramped studio, determined to raise my child without accepting help from a man who had betrayed me.

What I hadn't expected was meeting Adrian Moretti three months later at a quiet harbor cafe where I worked morning shifts. He hadn't approached me as a mafia Don. He had approached me as a quiet, observant man who bought black coffee every morning, listened to me speak about my dreams, and treated me with a profound, reverent respect I had never known.

When he discovered I was pregnant and struggling, he hadn't forced himself into my life. He had simply married me in a private civil ceremony two months ago, placing his name on the medical registry, ensuring no one in Chicago could ever harm me or my child. But I had refused to move into his mansion—until today.

Adrian reached across the leather seat, his broad, calloused hand covering mine gently.

"You don't have to prove anything to anyone, Claire," Adrian promised, his thumb softly brushing across my knuckles. "You are my wife. The mother of my child. Every building I own, every shipping dock, every dollar in my vault belongs to you and our daughter. Nathan Vance tried to humiliate you because he thought you were weak."

His gray eyes hardened into polished slate. "He is about to learn that touching my wife is the last mistake he will ever make in this city."

The Maybach pulled up to the grand front portico of the stone mansion. The heavy double mahogany doors were opened by two uniformed staff members who bowed their heads respectfully as Adrian stepped out, reaching back to take my hand and carefully assist me down.

Walking down the grand marble hallway, flanked by soaring archways and crystal chandeliers, a tall, elegant woman in her late fifties stepped forward to meet us. It was Rosa, Adrian’s long-time estate housekeeper and shadow confidante.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Moretti," Rosa smiled warmly, her eyes crinkling with genuine affection as she looked at my pregnant bump. "The master suite has been prepared, and the nursery wing on the second floor is ready for your review."

I blinked in surprise, looking up at Adrian. "The nursery wing?"

Adrian offered a rare, breathtaking smile—a look of pure, paternal pride that completely melted the severe, intimidating mask he wore for the world.

"Did you really think I wouldn't build a palace for my little princess, Claire?" Adrian murmured, guiding me toward the grand mahogany staircase. "Come. Let me show you your true home."
