Chapter 3 - The Stand at Pier 42At 11:45 PM, a heavy, freezing rain swept across Lake Michigan, battering the dark steel cranes of Pier 42.

Six black armored Maybachs belonging to the Kessler family pulled onto the wet cobblestones of the shipping yard, their high beams cutting through the dark fog, illuminating forty armed men wearing Moretti family colors standing near the edge of the water.
Dominic stepped out of the lead Maybach alone, wearing his charcoal coat, refusing an umbrella, walking straight toward the center of the docks without a single weapon visible in his hands.
Standing beside a sleek silver sports car was Don Salvatore Moretti—a ruthless, sixty-year-old mafia patriarch with silver hair and a scarred face—and his daughter, Julianna Moretti, who wore a red mink coat and looked at Dominic with pure, bitter spite.
"Dominic," Don Salvatore boomed, his voice carrying over the sound of the crashing waves. "You kept us waiting in the rain. Is this how the new Don of the Kessler family shows respect to his allies?"
Dominic stopped ten feet away, his broad hands tucked casually into his coat pockets, his posture relaxed, fluid, and completely devoid of fear.
"You brought forty men to my private pier, Salvatore," Dominic replied smoothly, every word dropped into the cold air like a block of iron. "That isn't an ally's visit. That's an invasion."
Julianna stepped forward, her diamond jewelry sparkling under the halogen floodlights. "You rejected our marriage contract, Dominic! You humiliated my family before the entire syndicate council! My father offered you half the Midwest territory, and you threw it away for what?! A common hospital nurse who washes bedpans?!"
Dominic went completely, breathlessly still.
The temperature on the docks seemed to plummet ten degrees in a single second. The casual, relaxed posture vanished, replaced by an absolute, terrifying aura of pure, unadulterated mortality.
"Say her name again, Julianna," Dominic spoke softly, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that made the armed guards behind Don Salvatore instinctively tighten their grip on their rifles. "Say her name with that tone again, and I will execute your father's entire front guard before your coat hits the wet pavement."
Don Salvatore froze, his eyes widening in sudden, shock-filled realization. He looked at Dominic's face—seeing no longer a young, reluctant heir, but a sovereign monster who would burn the entire city to ashes to protect what was his.

"You're insane, Kessler..." Don Salvatore rasped, stepping in front of his daughter. "You're going to start an all-out war with the Moretti family over an outsider?!"
"It isn't a war, Salvatore," Dominic promised deadpan, stepping closer until his tall frame towered over the old boss. "It's a liquidation. You have until sunrise to pull your men off my docks... or my operators will seize your private accounts in Zurich."
