Chapter 1 - The Shadow Behind the SilkThe quiet hum of the air conditioner inside Dominic Kessler’s high-rise penthouse was the only sound breaking the heavy silence between us.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the Chicago skyline stretched out like a galaxy of cold, indifferent lights. Across the room, Dominic stood in the shadow of his mahogany bookshelf, unbuttoning his dark tuxedo vest. The man who had spent hours sitting on a cheap plastic chair in a pediatric ward, letting eight-year-old Owen hold his finger, now looked like the sovereign lord of an empire built on iron and blood.

"Something worse?" I echoed softly, my voice barely carrying over the plush carpet. I stood near the marble fireplace, my hands clasped tightly over my simple cardigan. "What could be worse than what Mr. Bell told me, Dominic?"

Dominic turned slowly. His storm-gray eyes locked onto mine with an absolute, terrifying intensity that made my pulse leap against my throat. Up close, beneath the soft recessed lighting, the severe, carved line of his jawline didn't look like that of a generous philanthropist. It looked like a razor blade wrapped in fine wool.

"Mr. Bell told you about the Kessler family's shipping ports, Claire," Dominic spoke, his velvet baritone smooth, low, and devoid of any attempt to defend himself. "He told you about the union bosses who bow to my father, the politicians who take our envelopes, and the men who disappear when they step onto our docks."

He took three slow, deliberate steps toward me, stopping just two feet away. His tall, six-foot-three frame completely engulfed my vision, casting a long, intoxicating shadow over me.

"What he didn't tell you," Dominic continued, his fingers reaching out to lightly brush a loose strand of hair from my cheek, "is that six months ago, my father’s council officially named me the Don of the Kessler syndicate. And three weeks before I walked into Room Fourteen and met Owen... my father arranged a marriage between me and the daughter of the Moretti family."

My breath hitched in my throat. Cold air flooded my lungs.

"A marriage...?" I whispered, my hazel eyes wide with shock.

"An alliance," Dominic corrected flatly. "A political contract meant to unite the two largest crime syndicates in the Midwest. Her name is Julianna Moretti. And for six months, her father, Don Salvatore Moretti, has been waiting for me to sign the final marriage covenant."

I stumbled backward a half-step, my spine hitting the cold marble mantle of the fireplace.

"You're engaged," I breathed, tears of sudden, agonizing humiliation welling in my eyes. "You came to my hospital... you brought sandwiches to my desk... you held my hand in the corridor... while you were promised to another woman?!"

May you like

Dominic didn't let me retreat further. He closed the gap in a single, fluid motion, his broad, calloused hands coming up to gently, reverently frame my face. His touch was unexpectedly, agonizingly soft, contradicting every terrifying story I had ever heard about him.

"I am not engaged, Claire," Dominic promised, his gray eyes burning with a dark, apocalyptic fire. "Because the night I watched you rub your wrist at the nurses' station... I tore the Moretti covenant to pieces."
