Chapter 5 - The Glass Ceiling CracksThe grand crystal chandeliers of the Plaza Ballroom hummed with the high-society whispers of men in custom tuxedos and women dripping in diamonds. It was the premier event of the Manhattan social calendar—a night where fortunes were flexed, alliances were forged, and reputations were minted or destroyed.

And tonight, it was going to be an execution.

I stood in the private VIP antechamber just off the main ballroom, smoothing down the front of my midnight-blue silk gown. The dress hugged my thirty-four-week pregnant belly with quiet majesty, framing my silhouette in elegance. A diamond-encrusted silver sash rested just above my bump, catching the amber light of the chandeliers.

Beside me, my grandfather Julian adjusted his cufflinks, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the light as he reviewed the final portfolio of legal documents.

“Are you ready for this, Claire?” Julian asked, looking down at me with deep, unwavering affection.

“I was born ready the night he threw me out in the rain,” I replied, my voice steady and cold.

Out in the ballroom, the string quartet swelled into a celebratory crescendo. Through the heavy mahogany doors, we could hear the amplified voice of the gala host welcoming the evening’s guest of honor.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the host’s voice boomed across the speakers. “Please join me in welcoming the rising star of Manhattan real estate, CEO of Whitmore Holdings, Mr. Ethan Mercer, accompanied by his guest, acclaimed actress Miss Sabrina Vale!”

Applause rippled through the crowd.

Julian’s head security officer, Malcolm, tapped his earpiece and gave us a crisp nod. “They’ve just reached the center of the ballroom, Mr. Vance. Ethan is making his way toward the VIP podium to sign the final capitalization agreement.”

“Let’s give the groom his wedding present,” Julian said smoothly.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open.

Arm in arm, Ethan and Sabrina glided into the antechamber corridor toward the private terrace where the press was gathered. Ethan looked immaculate in a tailored Italian tuxedo, his hair slicked back, a triumphant, arrogant smirk plastered across his face. Sabrina clung to his arm like a trophy, wearing a plunging silver sequin dress that practically screamed for attention.

Then, Ethan stopped dead in his tracks.

The smirk vanished from his face as if someone had wiped it away with a sponge. His eyes locked onto me, standing tall in the center of the corridor beneath the glowing chandelier, glowing with health, wealth, and absolute power.

“Claire?” Ethan choked out, his voice pitching up in sheer disbelief. He stared at my prominent, thirty-four-week pregnant belly, then up at my face, his brain clearly struggling to process the impossible reality before him. “What… what are you doing here? How did you get in? Security!”

Nobody moved.

Malcolm and two massive private security guards stepped out from the shadows, blocking Ethan’s path backward into the ballroom.

“Looking for me, Ethan?” I asked, my voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade.

Sabrina blinked, tossing her head so her diamond earrings caught the light. “Ethan, who is this raggedy woman? Tell her to get out of our way, we have press waiting!”

Ethan ignored her completely, his face turning the color of curdled milk as he looked past me and saw my grandfather stepping out of the private office.

“Mr… Mr. Vance?” Ethan whispered, his knees visibly buckling beneath him. “You… you’re Richard’s… wait, you’re Julian Vale? The founder of Vale Capital?”

Julian didn't smile. He walked slowly toward Ethan, his silver eyes locking onto the younger man with the terrifying chill of an executioner.

“You gave my granddaughter twenty-four hours to disappear,” Julian said softly, his voice echoing off the marble walls. “You froze her accounts. You tried to throw her out on the street to die in the freezing rain while carrying three of my great-grandchildren.”

The ballroom doors behind Ethan had drifted open, and the whispering crowd of two hundred donors, politicians, and journalists had fallen dead silent, straining to hear every single word.

“No… no, there’s a mistake,” Ethan stammered, frantically looking around for a way out. “She… she was unstable! She didn't fit into my life! I gave her a settlement!”

“A settlement?” I stepped forward, my heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. I reached into the pearl clutch I was carrying and pulled out a thick cream-colored legal envelope. “Thirty-seven pages of legal language designed to rob me of everything I built with you, while you funneled two million dollars of marital funds into Miss Vale’s bank accounts.”

Sabrina gasped, turning to Ethan with wide, horrified eyes. “Ethan? What is she talking about? You told me her money was clean!”

“Shut up, Sabrina!” Ethan hissed, his composure completely shattering as he lunged forward toward me. “Claire, please! Listen to me! We can fix this! We can go home! Drop the lawsuits! Tell your grandfather to call off his lawyers!”

Malcolm stepped forward, planting a heavy hand on Ethan’s chest and sending him stumbling backward.

“Don't ever touch her,” Malcolm warned in a low, deadly growl.

I looked down at the divorce papers in my hand—the very ones Ethan had shoved across our glass dining table weeks ago—and slowly, deliberately, began to tear them in half.

Rip.

Rip.

Rip.

The sound of tearing paper echoed through the silent ballroom like gunshots.

“You wanted efficiency, Ethan?” I said, letting the shredded pieces flutter down like snow onto his polished Italian leather shoes. “Here is your efficiency. Vale Capital doesn't just own your debt. We own your company, your office, your car, and your future.”

Julian stepped up beside me, placing a warm, protective hand over my shoulder. “And the divorce papers you brought me that night, Ethan? Those weren't even the cruelest thing you did.”

Ethan stared at us, trembling violently, realizing the absolute, catastrophic totality of his destruction.

“Because as of ten minutes ago,” Julian continued coldly, “my legal team filed criminal indictments against you for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and the malicious endangerment of my pregnant granddaughter. Federal marshals are waiting downstairs in the lobby.”

As the camera shutters began to fire furiously from the doorway, capturing every second of the fallen golden boy’s humiliation, Ethan dropped to his knees on the marble floor, burying his face in his hands.

The game was over.
