Chapter 4 - The Countdown to ManhattanTwo weeks passed in a blur of medical checkups, legal strategies, and quiet healing. Under Dr. Sandra’s meticulous care, my body stabilized, and the babies continued to thrive inside the safety of the womb, safely past the critical danger zone of extreme premature birth.

My strength returned tenfold. Gone was the exhausted, tearful pregnant woman who had stood in the rain holding twenty-three dollars. In her place was a woman forged in betrayal, backed by a billionaire grandfather, and armed with undeniable proof of her husband’s corporate crimes.

On a crisp Friday afternoon in late November, Julian walked into my room carrying a long, elegant garment bag.

“It’s time,” Julian said simply, his silver eyes meeting mine with quiet pride.

I looked up from my tablet, where I was reviewing the final draft of the divorce petition. “Time for what?”

“Next Saturday night, the annual Manhattan Heritage Gala is being held at the Plaza Ballroom,” Julian said, unzipping the garment bag to reveal a breathtaking, custom-tailored midnight-blue silk gown designed specifically to accommodate my thirty-four-week pregnant belly without losing an ounce of sophisticated elegance. “Every high-society donor, politician, and corporate executive in the city will be there. Including guest of honor Ethan Mercer... and his companion, Sabrina Vale.”

I stared at the dress, feeling a rush of adrenaline surge through my veins. “Ethan is coming back to New York?”

“He thinks he has secured a massive venture capital bailout from an anonymous overseas investor to save Whitmore Holdings from bankruptcy,” Julian explained, a faint, dangerous smile touching his lips. “He plans to make his grand return to Manhattan society with Sabrina on his arm, announcing his triumphant victory over his ‘unstable, departed wife.’”

I stood up slowly, running my fingers over the smooth, shimmering silk of the gown. “And who is the anonymous investor?”

“You are, sweetheart,” Julian said softly. “Or rather, Vale Capital acting on your direct instructions. The bailout is a trap. The moment he steps onto that ballroom floor and tries to sign the acquisition contract, the lights go out.”

I walked over to the mirror, touching my reflection. My skin was glowing; my eyes were bright with fierce, unyielding resolve. The terrified girl who had been kicked out into the rain was gone.

“Let’s go to a party,” I whispered.
