Chapter 3 - The Silence Before the StormWhile I rested under heavy medical supervision in the VIP wing of Saint Jude’s, my three babies continued to grow, safely monitored day and night by the best neonatologists money could buy. But outside hospital walls, the world was spinning out of control for Ethan Mercer.

Back in Los Angeles, Ethan was busy playing the high-rolling executive.
According to the intelligence reports Julian’s private security firm dropped onto my bedside table every morning, Ethan and Sabrina Vale—the rising starlet whose face was plastered across every billboard on Sunset Boulevard—had checked into the penthouse suite of the Beverly Hills Hotel. Ethan was boasting to local investors about a massive upcoming commercial real estate acquisition in Manhattan, leveraging Whitmore Holdings’ capital as if he were already an untouchable titan.
What Ethan didn't know was that the ground beneath his feet had already turned to quicksand.
On Wednesday morning, Julian’s chief legal counsel, Katherine Vance, walked into my hospital room with a stack of encrypted legal files and a sleek tablet.
“Good morning, Claire,” Katherine said with a sharp, professional smile. She placed a cup of coffee on the bedside table and sat down. “Your grandfather asked me to brief you on the first phase of the corporate dismantling.”
I adjusted my pillows, looking down at the screen. “Tell me.”
“As of 8:00 AM today, Vale Capital has quietly acquired forty-nine percent of Whitmore Holdings’ primary debt obligations from their secondary institutional lenders,” Katherine explained, tapping the screen to reveal a dizzying cascade of financial ledgers. “Furthermore, we’ve filed an emergency injunction against Ethan’s personal accounts, freezing every asset associated with his personal name, his offshore holdings in the Cayman Islands, and his primary operational checking accounts.”
I blinked, staring at the numbers. “Every single account? Won't he notice immediately?”
“He already has,” Katherine smirked. “In fact, our sources report that Ethan attempted to pay a two-hundred-thousand-dollar deposit on a private yacht in Malibu this morning, and his black card was declined. He threw a massive tantrum in the middle of the showroom.”
A cold, satisfying thrill spread through my chest. For weeks, I had lived in terror of declining credit cards, wondering how I would afford diapers, groceries, or basic rent. Now, the tables had turned with a vengeance.
“What about Martin Keller?” I asked, remembering Ethan’s slick, cowardly attorney who had watched me sign away my rights without a word of protest.
Katherine’s smile grew razor-sharp. “Mr. Keller is currently under federal investigation for securities fraud and the illegal concealment of marital assets. Our forensic accountants discovered that Keller helped Ethan siphon over two million dollars of joint marital funds into a secret trust designated for Miss Vale. Keller’s law license is about to be revoked, and he’s facing up to ten years in federal prison.”

I leaned back against the pillows, looking out the window at the distant skyscrapers of Manhattan. Ethan thought he had rid himself of a burden. He thought he could trade me in for a younger model and continue his ascent into high-society luxury without a backward glance.
He had no idea that my grandfather owned the very foundation upon which his entire empire was built.
