Chapter 5 - The Insolvency of Grant KingsleyI walked cleanly down the central aisle beside Dominic, my posture tall, fluid, and royal, carrying an authority that commanded the attention of every billionaire in the room.

The board members who had ignored me during my marriage to Grant stood up from their chairs, bowing their heads respectfully as Dominic and I approached the primary VIP table.

Grant stumbled out from his corner table, pushing past two waiters, his face contorted in a wild mixture of panic, embarrassment, and desperate rage.

"Claire!" Grant shouted, stepping into our path, his hands trembling violently. "Claire! Look at me! What is the meaning of this spectacle?! You're wearing thirty-million-dollar emeralds while my accounts are frozen!"

Dominic stepped half an inch forward, his massive frame completely engulfing Grant in a dark, terrifying shadow.

"Step back, Kingsley," Dominic commanded softly, his baritone dropping into a register that made the surrounding security guards tense their shoulders.

Grant looked at Dominic, then looked past his shoulder at me, his eyes bloodshot and pleading.

"Claire... please!" Grant whimpered, his voice cracking softly. "Tell him to release my personal checking account! I have nowhere to live! The bank foreclosed on the Manhattan apartment yesterday! I'm your ex-husband!"

I looked at Grant calmly from beside Dominic, holding my chin high, my hazel eyes cold, clear, and utterly devoid of any lingering pain.

"You called me six months ago, Grant," I spoke softly, my voice carrying clean and absolute across the silent ballroom. "You told me I was 'worthless.' You told me I was barren. You took my dignity, my home, and my name, and you laughed on the steps of your church."

Grant wept openly, tears cutting clean tracks through the grease on his face. "I was wrong, Claire! Sienna lied to me! She manipulated me! I love you, Claire! I still love you!"

"You didn't love me, Grant," I corrected deadpan, every word dropped like an iron weight into his ruined world. "You loved my father’s trust money. And today... you have nothing."

Dominic pulled an encrypted tablet from his suit jacket, tapping the screen once to project live corporate restructuring documents onto the ballroom's primary media screens:

[ACQUISITION COMPLETE: MORETTI CAPITAL ABSORBS ALL REMAINING KINGSLEY GLOBAL REAL ESTATE LEASES.]

[NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE: GRANT KINGSLEY PERSONAL GUARANTEES EXECUTED.]

The entire room erupted into whispers and murmurs.

Grant dropped to his knees right there on the polished marble floor of the Plaza Hotel, burying his face in his hands, weeping like a broken, pathetic child as two city marshals stepped forward, grabbing his arms to escort him out to his trial.

I turned my back on his crying, broken frame, taking Dominic's arm, stepping into the warm, bright light of our victory.
