Chapter 4 - The Exit and the ContractThe humiliation was complete, absolute, and historic.

Marcus stood at his own wedding head table, ruined, silent, and sweating profusely, while Vivien wept silently behind her father’s shoulder. Patricia Aldridge looked like she was on the verge of a cardiac event, and the three hundred elite guests were already whispering furiously behind their gloved hands, their eyes fixed on the emerald-clad queen standing beside the king of shadows.

Elena didn't say another word to Marcus. She didn't look back at Vivien.

She turned to Dante, a genuine, radiant calm filling her hazel eyes. "I think we've paid our respects, Dante."

Dante offered a dark, breathtaking smile. He wrapped his broad arm around her waist, pulling her back flush against his solid frame, guiding her smoothly away from the head table toward the grand exit.

As they walked past the towering champagne pyramid, the guests bowed their heads, stepping back to clear an absolute path for them.

They stepped out through the mahogany double doors into the cool night air of the hotel courtyard, where a fleet of three black armored sedans waited with doors held open by armed guards.

The storm of noise, drama, and betrayal inside the hotel vanished, replaced by the quiet, crisp night air of Chicago.

Elena sank into the plush leather rear seat of the lead vehicle. The heavy door clicked shut with an airtight THUD, sealing them in a quiet, luxurious sanctuary.

She looked down at her hands. Her fingers were still shaking slightly, but the suffocating weight that had crushed her chest for three months was completely gone.

Dante sat beside her, unbuttoning his collar, pulling a crystal decanter of amber liquid from the console bar, pouring two small glasses. He handed one to her.

"You handled yourself remarkably well, Elena," Dante said softly, his gray eyes studying her face with deep respect.

Elena took a slow sip of the warm liquid, feeling it spread heat through her chest. She looked up into his sharp, handsome features.

"Thank you, Dante," Elena whispered softly. "You gave me my dignity back."

"I didn't give you dignity, Elena," Dante corrected quietly, leaning forward, his broad hand coming up to gently, reverently stroke her cheekbone. "You always had it. I merely gave you the stage to show them."

Elena paused, looking at the massive diamond gleaming on her left finger.

"And now?" Elena asked, her voice quiet. "The thirty minutes are over. We showed them. What happens to the ring... and to us?"

Dante’s gray eyes locked onto hers with a sudden, intense focus that made her breath catch in her throat.

May you like

He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a gold-embossed leather document binder, and laid it flat across her lap.

"I don't play games, Elena," Dante revealed softly. "I didn't offer you a thirty-minute trick. I offered you an alliance."
