Chapter 2 - The Silent EntranceThe grand ballroom of the Meridian Grand Hotel was bursting with noise, light, and celebration.

The ceremony had ended twenty minutes prior. Guests were mingling near the towering champagne pyramid, laughing under the crystal chandeliers while a jazz quartet played softly near the dance floor.

At the head table, Marcus Aldridge stood beside Vivien, holding a crystal flute, accepting congratulations from a line of Chicago’s social elite. Vivien looked radiant in her ivory silk gown, her diamond tiara sparkling under the lights as she accepted air-kisses from her sorority sisters.

Near the edge of the room, Patricia Aldridge was holding court with three wealthy wives, gesturing toward the back rows.

"She slipped out before the vows," Patricia was saying with a patronizing chuckle, taking a sip of vintage champagne. "Poor thing. I suppose reality finally set in. One really can't expect a girl of her background to handle an environment like this."

Her friends laughed politely—until the massive, mahogany double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom were thrown open by four hotel security guards who looked visibly terrified.

The ambient chatter in the room didn't stop immediately, but it began to wither from the entrance outward, like a wave of cold ice spreading across warm water.

Stepping through the doorway was a man whose presence commanded an absolute, suffocating authority. Dante Salvatore walked with the slow, fluid grace of a predator entering his own territory, wearing a dark tuxedo that made every other man's suit in the room look cheap.

And resting on his arm, her spine straight, her head held high, looking like a sovereign queen who had descended from an empire, was Elena Reyes.

The liquid-emerald dress caught the light of a hundred crystal chandeliers. The massive diamond on her left hand flared with brilliant white fire as she lightly touched Dante's sleeve. Her crimson lips were set in a calm, impenetrable composure.

A glass slipped from a waiter's tray near the door, shattering against the marble. CRASH.

No one looked at the waiter.

Patricia Aldridge’s smile froze mid-sentence. Her eyes bulged as her gaze traveled from Elena’s flawless, royal posture to the multi-million-dollar emerald necklace resting on her chest, and finally to the man standing beside her.

"My God..." one of the investment board members near the head table gasped, dropping his cigar. "Is that... is that Salvatore?"

Marcus turned his head at the sudden, unnatural silence in the room. His hands went limp around his champagne flute as he saw his ex-fiancée.

For three months, Marcus had remembered Elena as the quiet, heartbroken woman in simple clothes who wept in her small apartment when he returned her grandmother's ring. He had remembered her as a minor detail he had outgrown.

The woman standing at the entrance took his breath away—and terrified him to his absolute core.

Vivien’s confident, victorious smile completely vanished. Her jaw sagged open, her dark eyes locking onto the emerald necklace, then onto the massive diamond ring gleaming on Elena’s left hand.

Dante didn't look at the crowd. He leaned down slightly toward Elena, his voice carrying smoothly across the quiet room.

"Rule number one, my love," Dante murmured softly, his gray eyes filled with a dark, devious amusement. "We do not wait for them to approach us. We claim the room."
