Chapter 3 - The Shattered IllusionEvery conversation in the ballroom died completely as Dante guided Elena smoothly down the central aisle toward the head table.

The guests parted like the Red Sea, pulling back their designer gowns and stepping aside, bowing their heads in unconscious deference as Dante walked past.

Marcus stood frozen behind the bridal table, sweat beading along his hairline, his knuckles white against the tablecloth. Beside him, Vivien’s father, Richard Cole—a powerful real estate developer—rushed forward, his face pale, his hands trembling as he approached Dante.

"Mr... Mr. Salvatore!" Richard Cole stammered, bowing his head frantically, completely ignoring his daughter and newlywed son-in-law. "We... we had no idea you were in Chicago! If I had known you were attending, I would have sent a private car to collect you!"

Dante didn't stop walking until he stood three feet from Marcus and Vivien. He didn't look at Richard Cole. His storm-gray eyes locked onto Marcus Aldridge with a cold, freezing disdain that made Marcus's knees visibly tremble.

"I don't require your cars, Cole," Dante said flatly, his deep baritone echoing through the silent ballroom. "I came to accompany my fiancée."

A collective, breathless gasp rippled through the three hundred guests.

Marcus’s head snapped toward Elena, his eyes wild with disbelief and rising panic. "Fiancée...?! Elena... what is this?! Who is this man?!"

Elena looked at Marcus.

For three months, she had carried the phantom weight of his rejection—the belief that she was too poor, too ordinary, too insignificant for his bright, wealthy world.

Looking at him now, seeing him sweat in his custom tuxedo, seeing the sheer, pathetic terror in his eyes as he cowered beneath Dante’s shadow, she realized the absolute truth. Marcus wasn't a king. He was a small, weak, and cowardly boy who hid behind his mother’s money.

Elena raised her left hand slightly, letting the eight-carat emerald-cut diamond catch the light directly in front of Marcus's face.

"This is Dante, Marcus," Elena spoke, her voice calm, clear, and resonant, carrying to every ear in the room. "The man who realized my worth the moment you discarded it."

Vivien stepped forward, her ivory Vera Wang dress rustling noisily, her voice high and shrill with frantic rage. "This is a stunt! She's lying! She was sitting in the back row twenty minutes ago wearing a cheap dress! She hired an actor!"

Dante turned his eyes slowly toward Vivien.

The sheer, apocalyptic temperature in his gaze made Vivien’s breath hitch in her throat, her words dying instantly in her mouth.

"Miss Cole," Dante spoke, every word dropping like a slab of cold iron onto the floorboards. "Your father's primary commercial tower on 5th Avenue is mortgaged through my Zurich holding firm. If you speak to my future wife in that tone again... I will foreclose on your family's estate before the cake is cut."

Richard Cole let out a choked, terrified gasp, grabbing his daughter’s arm, yanking her back behind him. "Vivien! Shut your mouth!"

Patricia Aldridge pushed her way through the crowd, her face pale, her Chanel suit rumpled as she stared at Dante. "Mr. Salvatore... please... there must be a misunderstanding! Elena comes from nothing! Her father was a mechanic! She isn't one of us!"

Dante looked down at Patricia with a look of profound, chilling pity.

"You are correct, Mrs. Aldridge," Dante whispered, his voice smooth as silk and lethal as steel. "She is not one of you. She is far above you. And tomorrow morning... my legal team will be reviewing your son's firm’s investment portfolios."
