Chapter 5 - The Turning TablesElijah felt as though the floor had dropped out from under him. For the first time in his life, his money, his status, and his charm had failed him completely. He watched as Rachel walked back into the main ballroom, where she was immediately approached by CEO after CEO, each vying for her attention with desperate enthusiasm.

Greg and Tyler walked up to Elijah, shaking their heads in stunned amusement.

"Well, Wescott," Greg said, clapping a heavy hand on Elijah's shoulder. "I think you just lost the easiest thousand dollars of your life. In fact, I'm pretty sure half the Fortune 500 is trying to hire her away from you right now."

"Shut up, Greg," Elijah snapped, his eyes fixed on Rachel, who was currently laughing at something witty said by a handsome tech billionaire.

The realization hit Elijah with crushing weight: Rachel wasn't just his best secretary. She was brilliant, stunning, fiercely independent, and completely out of his reach. And worse—she hated him.

Monday morning arrived with a suffocating tension in the executive suite.

Elijah sat behind his glass-walled office, staring blankly at his computer screen, but his eyes kept drifting toward desk number four.

At precisely 8:59 AM, the elevator doors chimed.

Rachel walked in. She was wearing her thick glasses again. She had on a modest, well-tailored gray blazer and a neat blouse. Her hair was tied back into a sleek, professional twist. She looked intelligent, composed, and utterly unreachable.

She didn't look at Elijah’s office as she sat down, booted up her computer, and began typing with her signature, flawless speed.

Elijah stood up from his desk, pushed open his glass door, and walked out into the open office area. He stopped right beside her desk.

Rachel didn't look up. "Good morning, Mr. Wescott. Your 9:30 meeting with the auditing firm has been rescheduled to 10:00 AM, and I've already prepared the financial summaries on your desk."

Elijah swallowed hard, his throat tight. "Rachel... can we talk?"

Rachel finally stopped typing. She looked up, her thick glasses reflecting the fluorescent office lights, hiding the brilliant emerald eyes beneath them. Her expression was completely professional, utterly neutral, and chillingly distant.

"If it's about office business, I'm entirely at your disposal, Mr. Wescott," Rachel said evenly. "If it's personal... I believe my private life is none of your concern, just as my appearance is none of yours."
