Chapter 4 - The ConfrontationRachel felt the eyes of the entire room on her, but one gaze burned into her skin more intensely than the rest. She didn’t need to look directly to know where Elijah was standing. She could feel his confusion, his shock, and above all, his mounting frustration.

She walked toward the balcony doors, needing a breath of cool night air, when a shadow fell across her path.
"Rachel."
The voice was low, laced with an aggressive mix of disbelief and demand. She turned slowly to find Elijah standing right in front of her, his expression a storm of conflicting emotions. Up close, without his usual calm executive armor, he looked genuinely rattled.
"Elijah," Rachel said, her voice dripping with cool indifference. "Good evening. Shouldn't you be mingling? I thought you hated social obligations."
Elijah stared at her, his eyes darting from her flawless hair down to the shimmering midnight-blue dress. "What is this?" he demanded, his voice dropping to an urgent whisper. "What are you wearing? What is the meaning of all... this?"
Rachel raised an eyebrow, tilting her head with casual amusement. "This? It's a dress, Elijah. And I'm attending a charity gala. Last time I checked, tickets were distributed to all senior staff. Or did you assume I only knew how to wear oversized cardigans?"
"You deceived me," Elijah accused, taking a half-step closer. "For three years, you sat at that desk looking like a Victorian librarian, and you're... you're this? Why? Why hide yourself?"
Rachel let out a soft, cold laugh. It was a sound Elijah had never heard before—devoid of her usual polite subservience.
"Hide myself?" Rachel repeated, her emerald eyes locking onto his with razor-sharp intensity. "Elijah, I didn't hide myself from the world; I hid myself from you and men like you. Do you have any idea what it’s like to work in a corporate shark tank when you actually possess talent? If I looked like this from day one, I would have spent my entire workday fighting off inappropriate advances, unwanted touches, and superficial judgments from bosses who care more about eye candy than competence."
Elijah flinched. The words hit him like a physical blow, dragging up his own arrogant conversation from two days ago. “She’s ugly and boring... zero effort with appearance.”
"Rachel, look, about what I said in the office—" Elijah started, his voice losing its defensive edge.
"Save it, Elijah," Rachel interrupted smoothly, her tone absolute. "You made a bet, didn't you? $1,000 with Greg and Tyler that no one would dance with the ugly, boring secretary. Well, I overheard every single word."
Elijah’s face drained of color. "You... you heard us?"

"Every single word," Rachel confirmed, her smile razor-sharp. "And you know what? Thank you. Because hearing how little you valued me was the greatest gift you could have ever given me. It reminded me never to waste another ounce of energy trying to make a superficial tyrant comfortable."
Before Elijah could muster a single word of defense, Rachel turned her back on him with absolute grace, leaving him standing alone in the shadow of the balcony curtains.
