Chapter 2 - The Grand EntranceInside the sprawling, crystal-chandeliered ballroom, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, champagne, and performative philanthropy. Elijah Wescott stood near the bar, swirling amber scotch in a crystal tumbler while laughing at a joke made by Greg and Tyler.

Elijah looked immaculate in a tailored charcoal tuxedo, his sharp jawline and arrogant smirk drawing admiring glances from several socialites nearby. Yet, he looked bored. Charity events were always the same: endless speeches, fake smiles, and people begging for donations.
"So, Wescott," Tyler teased, nudging Elijah's shoulder. "Did your precious secretary end up coming tonight? Or did she take one look at her wardrobe and decide to stay home eating ice cream?"
Elijah let out a dry, dismissive chuckle. "Please, Tyler. Rachel doesn't even own a dress that isn't beige or gray. She’s probably sitting at home typing up spreadsheets for Monday just to feel useful. Honestly, I almost feel bad for the bet. It’s like betting whether a stray cat will catch a prize pigeon."
Greg shook his head, glancing toward the grand entrance. "You're too harsh, Elijah. She's a brilliant worker. You shouldn't have said those things."
"I said what everyone thinks," Elijah shrugged, taking a sip of his scotch. "Utility is utility, and beauty is—"
He never finished the sentence.
Suddenly, a hush swept over the front entrance of the ballroom, spreading like a ripple through the crowd of hundreds. The lively chatter noticeably dipped, and heads turned in unison toward the sweeping marble staircase.
At the top of the stairs stood two women. Moren stepped out first, looking radiant in a crimson gown, but all eyes—every single pair of eyes in the room—immediately locked onto the woman beside her.
Rachel Appleton descended the stairs.
The midnight-blue silk gown draped over her body like a work of art. The ambient light caught the subtle shimmer of the fabric, framing her flawless features, her striking emerald eyes, and the quiet, hypnotic confidence in her stride. She didn't look down at the floor as she walked; her gaze was forward, calm, and devastatingly poised.
Whispers erupted instantly among the elite crowd.
“Who is that?”
“Is she a foreign royal?”
“I’ve never seen her at any of the galas before... Good lord, she’s breathtaking.”
Elijah froze. The crystal glass in his hand slipped slightly, the scotch sloshing against the rim. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. His brain scrambled to process the image before him, refusing to bridge the gap between the mousy, cardigans-wearing woman at desk number four and the goddess walking down the stairs.

"Holy mother of God," Greg breathed, his jaw dropping. "Elijah... tell me that isn't..."
Elijah couldn't speak. His throat felt dry as sand. His eyes were wide, glued to Rachel as she gracefully reached the bottom of the staircase and stepped onto the ballroom floor.
