Chapter 1 - The TransformationThe morning of the charity gala arrived with a heavy, overcast sky in the city, but inside Rachel Appleton’s apartment, the atmosphere crackled with electric anticipation. Moren sat on the velvet sofa, a cup of herbal tea growing cold in her hands as she stared at the closed door of Rachel’s bedroom.

For three years, Moren had known Rachel only as the office ghost—a woman wrapped in charcoal-gray cardigans, hiding behind thick, tortoiseshell frames that magnified her exhausted eyes. But tonight was about retribution, liberation, and peeling back a carefully constructed fortress.
A soft click echoed through the apartment. The door slowly swung open.
Moren’s breath caught in her throat. She stood up so fast her tea spilled slightly onto the saucer.
"Rachel..." Moren whispered, her eyes wide with absolute disbelief.
Rachel stepped forward into the warm light of the living room. The transformation was not merely physical; it radiated from her posture, the sharp confidence in her chin, and the undeniable aura of power she carried. Gone was the hunched posture and the timid gait.
She wore a backless, midnight-blue silk gown that hugged her silhouette with effortless grace. The fabric shimmered under the lights like a star-studded night sky, catching the light with every subtle movement. Her thick, unruly hair—previously trapped in a harsh, messy bun—was now styled in loose, cascading waves that fell over her bare shoulders like liquid silk.
And her face? The heavy, round glasses lay abandoned on her bedside table. In their place, expertly applied makeup accentuated her high cheekbones, deep emerald eyes, and full lips, giving her the striking, classic elegance of an old-Hollywood screen goddess.
"Well?" Rachel asked, a playful, dangerous smile playing on her lips as she did a slow turn. "Will Elijah Wescott recognize his favorite invisible secretary?"
"Recognize you?" Moren gasped, running a hand over the sleeve of the stunning dress. "Rachel, he’s going to have a heart attack. You look like a million bucks—no, you look like you own a million bucks. Where on earth did you get this dress? And how did you hide that face behind those glasses for three years?!"

Rachel’s smile turned bittersweet. "When you grow up with a family that values you only for your social status, you learn how to disappear. I chose to hide because competence keeps you safe, but tonight... tonight I want him to realize what a colossal fool he has been."
As they stepped out of the cab outside the Grand Ballroom—the city’s most prestigious charity venue—the flashing cameras of paparazzi blinded them for a second. Rich elites in designer tuxedos and glittering diamonds milled around the red carpet. Little did they know, the most explosive entrance of the year was about to walk right through those double doors.
