Chapter 3 - The First ShockThe music swelled again, but the dynamic of the entire room had shifted. High-profile executives, wealthy investors, and eligible bachelors immediately began to drift toward the staircase like iron filings to a magnet.

Elijah stood paralyzed, his mind racing in a state of sheer vertigo. Rachel? How was this possible? For three years, he had looked at her every single day and seen nothing more than a functional, boring appendage of his office furniture. Yet here she was, eclipsing every high-society woman in the room, including the daughters of billionaire board members who spent small fortunes on their appearance.

Tyler nudged Elijah hard in the ribs, a mixture of shock and amusement on his face. "Well, Wescott. Looks like your thousand dollars is in serious jeopardy. I think half the room is about to ask her to dance."

"Shut up, Tyler," Elijah muttered, his voice sharp and uncharacteristically defensive. He felt a hot spike of irritation pierce his chest—an unfamiliar, jarring emotion. Why was she dressed like that? Why hadn't she ever looked like that at the office? Was she mocking him?

Before Elijah could process his swirling thoughts, a local shipping tycoon, a notoriously ruthless billionaire named Julian Vance, stepped directly into Rachel’s path with a dazzling, practiced smile.

"Excuse me, beautiful lady," Julian said smoothly, bowing slightly. "Julian Vance. I must be the luckiest man in the city tonight to lay eyes on someone as striking as you. May I have the honor of this dance?"

From across the room, Elijah felt his fists clench so tightly his knuckles turned white. Julian Vance? Julian was a shark, a man known for stealing corporate accounts and winning over any woman he set his sights on.

To Elijah's utter shock, Rachel didn't immediately swoon. Instead, she offered Julian a cool, polite smile—the exact same professional smile she used when rejecting a subpar vendor report.

"Thank you for the flattering offer, Mr. Vance," Rachel’s voice carried clearly across the quietened space around them. "But I prefer to choose my dance partners based on substance, not impulse."

A ripple of muted laughter and gasps echoed from the onlookers. Julian Vance—refused, smoothly and publicly, by a woman whose name he didn’t even know yet!

Julian chuckled, seemingly intrigued rather than offended. "A woman of standards. I respect that. Perhaps later, then?"

"Perhaps," Rachel replied smoothly, gracefully walking past him.

Elijah watched her every move, his chest burning with a strange, possessive fury. She’s my secretary, a voice in his head screamed. She works for me. Why is she acting like society royalty?
