Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Vances

The grand dining room of the Lake Geneva estate was paneled in dark mahogany, illuminated by natural sunlight pouring through towering stained-glass windows. Yet despite the opulent setting, the atmosphere inside was as cold and lethal as an operating room.

Arthur Vance sat at the long mahogany table, his head in his hands, looking twenty years older than he had an hour ago. Tyler stood behind him, trembling, having been forbidden from speaking another word under threat of physical removal by Giovanni’s guards.

Elena sat at the head of the table, slowly stirring a silver spoon in her porcelain teacup. She looked across the table at Jessica, who sat composed and unyielding beside Giovanni.

"It appears," Elena said deliberately, breaking the silence, "that my prospective in-laws were somewhat less stable than I had originally been led to believe. The proposed real estate merger between Fierro Logistics and Vance Holdings is hereby canceled, effective immediately."

Arthur groaned, sliding further down in his chair. "Elena, please—we can restructure—"

"You can declare bankruptcy and liquidate your personal assets to pay back the funds your son stole," Elena corrected icily. "My legal team will be filing a restraining order against Tyler Vance to ensure he comes within five hundred yards of neither my nephew’s wife nor her child."

She shifted her gaze to Jessica.

"You played a very dangerous game last night, young woman," Elena continued, her tone softening just a fraction. "You walked into a room full of wolves and refused to blink."

"Wolves only attack if they think you're prey, Mrs. Fierro," Jessica replied calmly, taking a sip of her water. "I was never prey."

Giovanni watched Jessica with a look that was entirely stripped of his usual corporate armor. There was genuine warmth, profound respect, and something dangerously close to devotion in his amber eyes.

"As for the marriage," Elena continued, standing up from her chair. "Whether it started as a strategic fiction or not, you have proven yourself worthy of the name. The family registry will be updated by Monday morning. Welcome to the family, Jessica."

With that, the matriarch swept out of the room, leaving the Vances completely shattered in her wake.

Arthur stood up shakily, glaring at his son with unbridled fury before storming out of the room without a word. Tyler was left standing alone, staring at Jessica with a look of pure, desperate defeat.

"Jessica... please," Tyler whispered, his voice cracking. "We have a history. Lily... Lily needs her father—"

"You gave up the right to be a father the day you walked out on a pregnant woman to secure a corporate promotion," Jessica said, her voice devoid of anger, entirely hollow of any emotion toward him. "Stay away from us, Tyler. Because next time, Giovanni won't just take your shipping containers. He'll take everything."

Tyler swallowed hard, turned on his heel, and fled the estate.
