Chapter 4 - The Lake Geneva Estate

The Fierro estate on Lake Geneva looked less like a private home and more like a European fortress transported onto the picturesque shores of Wisconsin. Wrought-iron gates twenty feet high swung open automatically as Giovanni’s black Maybach approached, flanked by two SUVs carrying his personal security detail.
Jessica sat in the passenger seat, wearing the midnight-blue dress. Her hair was styled in a sleek, elegant twist, and she wore a pair of delicate diamond earrings that Giovanni had casually handed her before they crossed state lines, claiming they were a "family heirloom that belonged on a Fierro."
"Relax," Giovanni said, noticing her fingers tightly gripping her small clutch. "My aunt is a formidable woman, but she respects strength above all else. Do not give an inch."
"Easy for you to say," Jessica muttered. "You weren't raised by a mother who taught you to apologize for taking up space."
As the car glided to a halt in front of the grand limestone manor, the double oak doors opened. Elena Fierro stood on the grand portico, flanked not only by her personal assistants but also by Arthur Vance—Tyler’s father—and a visibly shaken Tyler himself.
Giovanni stepped out first, walking around the car to open Jessica’s door. He offered his hand. Jessica took it, sliding her fingers into his with practiced confidence, and stepped out onto the gravel driveway.
"Well," Elena said, descending the stone steps with measured grace, her eyes sweeping over Jessica’s attire with microscopic scrutiny. "You clean up remarkably well for a nurse from Brooklyn."
"Thank you, Mrs. Fierro," Jessica replied, her voice cool and level. "Elegance is simply a matter of proper breeding and the right company."
A flicker of genuine surprise crossed Elena’s face. She clearly hadn't expected the shy, corner-sitting woman from the wedding to bite back.
Before Elena could respond, Tyler burst forward from the back of the group, his face purple with fury. "Don't listen to her, Aunt Elena! It’s all a sham! I was married to her for three years! She doesn't know anything about high society, high finance, or the Fierro family! She's a gold-digger who trapped me with a kid and then bounced!"
The courtyard went dead silent. The security guards stiffened, their hands hovering near their jackets.
Giovanni’s eyes turned to shards of ice. He stepped forward to intercept Tyler, but Jessica raised a hand, stopping him.
She walked slowly toward her ex-husband, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. Tyler sneered, expecting her to cower as she used to do when he criticized her bills.
Instead, Jessica stopped two feet away from him, looked him dead in the eye, and smiled.
"Trapped you, Tyler?" she asked, her voice carrying clearly across the entire courtyard. "Is that what you call telling your parents you were moving to London for a fellowship while you were actually shacked up with your executive assistant three blocks away?"
Tyler’s face went pale. "You—you don't know what you're talking about—"
"I know all about the offshore shell accounts, Tyler," Jessica interrupted smoothly, her voice dropping an octave. "I know about the funds you siphoned from Vance Logistics to pay off your personal gambling debts. And more importantly... I know that your father’s corporate compliance officers are currently looking through the exact hard drives I copied before I walked out of your life."
Arthur Vance stepped forward, his eyes bulging as he stared at his son. "Tyler... what is she talking about? What offshore accounts?"
"Dad, she's lying! She's crazy!" Tyler stammered, sweating profusely now under the collective glare of both the Fierro family and his own father.
"She isn't lying," a deep, calm voice echoed from the doorway.
Everyone turned. Marcus Vance—Tyler’s estranged uncle and the ethical conscience of the family banking dynasty, whom Giovanni had secretly flown in that morning—stepped out onto the porch holding a thick manila folder.

"I audited those accounts myself at Jessica’s request three days ago," Marcus announced loudly. "Tyler has been systematically looting the family firm for over a year. If federal investigators get these files, the entire Vance enterprise goes under before the end of the month."
Elena Fierro stared at Marcus, then at Tyler, and finally at Jessica. A slow, incredibly sharp smile spread across the matriarch's face.
