Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Red Hook and the Midnight Call

The taxi dropped Jessica off two blocks away from her small apartment in the quiet, working-class neighborhood near the Chicago River. She didn't want Tyler or any of his associates tracking her home address, though after Giovanni’s private security detail escorted her back in an armored SUV, she doubted anyone from the wedding would dare approach her tonight.

When she unlocked her front door, the overwhelming wave of normal life hit her instantly.

The small living room was littered with wooden blocks, a half-colored coloring book, and a tiny pair of pink sneakers by the door. From the bedroom down the hall came the soft, rhythmic breathing of five-year-old Lily, who was fast asleep beneath a blanket covered in cartoon stars.

Jessica dropped her thrift-store purse on the kitchen counter, kicked off her heels, and buried her face in her hands.

What have I gotten myself into?

She was a pediatric nurse from a modest background. She spent her days comforting sick children and fighting with insurance companies. In less than twenty-four hours, she had allowed herself to be swept into the orbit of Giovanni Fierro—a man whose family controlled half the commercial infrastructure of the Midwest, a man currently using her as a human shield against an arranged corporate marriage.

Her phone buzzed violently on the counter.

An unknown number.

She hesitated before swiping the screen and pressing it to her ear. "Hello?"

"You're awake," Giovanni’s voice came through the speaker, rich and steady, as if he were sitting right across the kitchen table. "I expected you would be pacing."

"I am not pacing," Jessica lied, immediately abandoning her pacing near the sink. "I am re-evaluating every single life choice that led to me standing on a balcony with a mob-boss-adjacent billionaire who just invited me to a Sunday brunch interrogation."

"It's not an interrogation; it's a family gathering," Giovanni replied dryly. "And I am a legitimate businessman, Jessica. The shipping ports just require a certain... aggressive negotiation style."

"Your aunt hates me. Tyler is terrified of you, which means he's going to do something stupid out of desperation. And I have nothing to wear to a Lake Geneva estate brunch that won't scream 'borrowed pretender.'"

A pause on the other line. Then, the sound of rustling paper.

"Check your front porch," Giovanni instructed.

Jessica frowned, walking quietly to the front door and unlocking the deadbolt. She pulled the door open just a few inches. Resting on the welcome mat was a sleek, matte-black garment bag bearing the logo of a high-end Fifth Avenue boutique, alongside a secure, encrypted satellite phone.

"What is this?" she asked, pulling the items inside and locking the door.

"An insurance policy," Giovanni said smoothly. "The dress inside was selected by a stylist who understands that a Fierro bride does not wear thrift-store wool to a family summit. As for the phone, keep it with you. If Tyler, his father, or my dear aunt attempts to contact you directly, route all communications through that device. My team will handle the noise."

Jessica unzipped the garment bag. Inside hung a breathtaking, understated cocktail dress of deep midnight-blue silk, paired with a matching cashmere wrap and a pair of classic leather heels in her exact size.

"How did you know my shoe size?" she whispered, genuinely startled.

"You mentioned working double shifts on your feet when Tyler insulted your career outside the ballroom," Giovanni replied simply. "A man who pays attention notices details. Rest well, Jessica. I will pick you up at ten o'clock tomorrow morning."

The line went dead.

Jessica stood in her quiet kitchen, staring at the dress, then down at her sleeping daughter's bedroom door. She knew the risks. She knew that playing a high-stakes game with the Fierro family could blow up in her face and leave her entirely vulnerable. But as she touched the soft silk of the dress, she realized something else: for the first time since Tyler walked out on her while she was pregnant, she didn't feel powerless.
