Chapter 2 - The Roots of the Empire

The music faded into polite applause, but Giovanni did not immediately release her. Instead, he kept her hand in his, turning them slowly away from the glaring eyes of the wedding guests and toward the grand terrace doors that opened out onto the moonlit Chicago River.
"Outside," Giovanni instructed gently, guiding her past a cluster of whispering bridesmaids who parted like the Red Sea before them.
The crisp autumn air hit Jessica like a splash of cold water, but the heavy wool of Giovanni’s custom-tailored jacket—which he slipped off his shoulders and draped over hers without asking—warded off the chill. It smelled faintly of cedar, expensive leather, and something sharp like espresso.
"Thank you," Jessica murmured, pulling the jacket tighter around herself. "Though I suspect you didn't bring me out here just for the fresh air."
"True," Giovanni said, leaning against the stone balustrade and looking out over the glittering dark water of the river. "You need to understand the board you've just stepped onto, Jessica. The Fierro name isn't just old money in Chicago; it’s an institution. My aunt, Elena Fierro, rules this family like a medieval court. She arranged tonight’s gala specifically to announce my betrothal to Victoria Vance’s older sister, Beatrice, cementing a real estate and shipping merger between our families."
Jessica stopped breathing for a fraction of a second. "Victoria... as in Tyler’s mistress-turned-wife?"
"The very same," Giovanni confirmed, a dark shadow crossing his striking features. "The Vances are desperate. Their shipping logistics firm is bleeding capital, and their recent real estate ventures are one missed audit away from total collapse. They needed a merger with the Fierro logistics network to survive. Elena was more than happy to oblige, provided I played the dutiful corporate heir."
"And you decided to blow up your family's grand plan by claiming a random pediatric nurse as your wife?" Jessica asked, a disbelieving laugh escaping her lips. "Giovanni, your aunt looks like she eats nails for breakfast. When she realizes what you've done, she’s going to destroy both of us."
"Let her try," Giovanni said softly, though the absolute coldness in his voice made the hairs on Jessica's arms stand up. "Elena forgets that I control the primary liquid capital of the family holdings. She has the title; I have the leverage. But you... you have something far more valuable than my leverage."
Jessica frowned. "I have nothing. I have a shared rental agreement, a five-year-old daughter, and a mountain of student debt."
"You have insider knowledge of the Vance family's domestic decay," Giovanni corrected, turning to face her fully. "Tyler Vance is listed as a junior partner in his father’s firm, but according to my intelligence reports, he’s been embezzling minor accounts to fund his lavish lifestyle and his new family with Victoria. If his wife—or in this case, his former wife’s new husband—were to casually mention that audit discrepancy to the federal compliance officers currently investigating the shipping docks... well, the wedding tonight would be the least of their worries."
Jessica stared at him, her eyes wide. "You investigated Tyler."
"I investigate everyone I do business with," Giovanni replied smoothly. "And when I saw him cornering you by the kitchen doors, looking at you with that grotesque sense of ownership, I decided that your ex-husband was about to learn a very expensive lesson about boundaries."
Before Jessica could process the sheer scale of the man standing before her, the glass terrace door slid open with a sharp click.
A woman in an emerald-green silk dress, her silver hair pulled back into an immaculate, severe chignon, stepped onto the balcony. Her sharp, aristocratic features were etched with unmistakable fury. Behind her stood Tyler Vance, looking desperate and sweaty, wringing his hands like a whipped dog.
"Giovanni," Elena Fierro’s voice cut through the night air like a razor blade. "Explain to me why the entire dining room is whispering that you have secretly married a kitchen-adjacent nobody."
Giovanni didn't flinch. He slowly straightened up, stepping slightly in front of Jessica as if to shield her, though Jessica immediately stepped out from behind him, meeting the matriarch's gaze head-on.
"Good evening, Mrs. Fierro," Jessica said, her voice completely steady. "It’s a pleasure to finally meet you. I’m Jessica Fierro."
Elena’s eyes narrowed into venomous slits. "You are nothing of the sort. Tyler Vance has just informed me that you are his divorced, destitute ex-wife—a common nurse who can barely afford her own rent."
Tyler stepped forward, puffing out his chest now that he had backup. "It's true, Aunt Elena—er, Mrs. Fierro. She's delusional. She showed up here uninvited, and she's clearly manipulating Giovanni for his money."
Giovanni’s expression turned lethal. He took a step toward Tyler, his height and sheer physical presence causing Tyler to instinctively recoil.
"If you ever speak of my wife in that tone again," Giovanni said, each word dropping like a lead weight, "I will ensure that every shipping container belonging to Vance Logistics is seized by federal customs before sunrise."
Elena raised a slender hand, silencing both men with a single gesture. She studied Jessica with cold, calculated precision, looking past the borrowed wrap and seeing the fierce intelligence burning behind Jessica's amber-specked eyes.
"So," Elena murmured, a dangerous, thin smile forming on her lips. "You claim to be married. In our world, Mrs. Fierro, a marriage isn't valid just because a man pulls you onto a dance floor. It requires proof. Documentation. A public display that withstands scrutiny."
Jessica’s heart skipped a beat. She had walked into a trap.
"We have our methods, Aunt Elena," Giovanni replied smoothly.
"Do you?" Elena challenged, stepping closer. "Then prove it. By tomorrow noon, at the Fierro family estate on Lake Geneva, you will bring your bride to Sunday brunch. If you fail to show—or if her story falls apart—the Vance-Fierro merger proceeds, and your little stunt tonight becomes the laughingstock of Chicago."
May you like
Elena turned on her heel, her emerald dress rustling sharply against the stone floor, and swept back inside, leaving Tyler staring at Jessica with a mixture of hatred and lingering fear.
Giovanni looked down at Jessica, his expression a mix of apology and intense curiosity. "Well, Jessica. It appears our dance isn't over yet."
