Chapter 6 - The Trap at the GalaThe grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of diamond necklaces, black tuxedoes, and high-society hypocrisy.

It was the annual Sterling Global Charity Gala—the event Victoria Sterling had organized to celebrate her self-proclaimed appointment as sole trustee of the Sterling estate. She stood near the main stage, wearing an emerald gown, sipping champagne, surrounded by reporters and wealthy investors.
"We are deeply saddened that my dear stepdaughter, Maya, cannot be with us tonight due to her ongoing medical treatment," Victoria lied smoothly into a news microphone, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief. "But her father's legacy lives on through our family's leadership—"
"Does it, Victoria?" a clear, powerful voice echoed from the main entrance doors.
The music stopped. The reporters spun around. Cameras flashed frantically.
Walking down the grand velvet staircase was Maya Sterling.
She was breathtaking. She wore a custom-designed white silk gown that clung to her stunning curves, a diamond necklace glittering at her throat, her dark hair styled in elegant waves. She walked with supreme confidence, her posture regal, her eyes flashing with dangerous authority.
And standing beside her, his hand resting possessively on the small of her back, was Ethan Vale.
The room gasped in collective shock.
"Maya?!" Victoria shrieked, dropping her champagne glass onto the marble floor, where it shattered into a hundred pieces. Her face drained of all color as she backed away toward her son, Julian. "What... what are you doing here?! You're supposed to be—"
"In a psychiatric facility?" Maya finished smoothly, stepping up to the main stage microphone, her voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "Or perhaps dying of digitalis poisoning in the east wing?"
Whispers erupted across the crowd. Reporters pushed forward, raising their cameras.
"She’s lying! She’s delusional!" Julian Sterling yelled, stepping forward aggressively. "Security, escort this woman out!"
Before the estate guards could take a single step, four federal marshals pushed through the double doors, followed closely by Prosecutor Vance and Ethan’s chief legal counsel.
"Nobody moves," the lead federal marshal announced, pulling a set of arrest warrants from his coat. "Victoria Sterling, Julian Sterling, and Dr. Richard Harrison. You are under federal arrest for attempted murder by poisoning, corporate fraud, and unlawful confinement."
"This is an outrage!" Victoria screamed, backing against the stage backdrop as the marshals stepped up to place steel handcuffs around her wrists. "You have no proof!"
Ethan stepped forward, his tall figure commanding absolute silence in the room. He reached into his coat and pulled out a digital tablet, pointing it toward the grand projection screens above the stage.
"We have plenty of proof, Victoria," Ethan said coldly. "We have the original lab reports from Mount Sinai, the recorded confession from Dr. Harrison obtained two hours ago, and the forensic financial audit proving you stole eighty million dollars from the Sterling Trust."
The projection screens flashed to life, displaying signed bank documents, wire transfers, and video footage of Dr. Harrison confessing to administering the synthetic toxin under Victoria’s orders.
The ballroom erupted into chaos. Flashes exploded from every direction as reporters swarmed Victoria and Julian while they were led away in handcuffs, screaming and cursing.
Maya stood at the center of the stage, watching her captors fall. A heavy weight that had rested on her chest for eight long months vanished into thin air.
Ethan walked up the stage steps, stopping directly in front of her. He didn't care about the news cameras flashing around them. He didn't care about the hundred billionaire investors watching.
He reached out, pulling her into his arms, holding her tight against his chest.

"You did it, Maya," Ethan whispered against her hair. "It's over."
Maya buried her face into his neck, tears of relief spilling down her cheeks. "We did it," she corrected softly. "Together."
