Chapter 5 - The Morning StainWhen soft, pale morning light crept through the tall glass windows, it painted the master suite in warm shades of gold and amber.

Ethan woke up first.

His arm was wrapped securely around Maya’s waist, her back pressed against his chest, her soft, rhythmic breathing steady and peaceful against his arm. For the first time in his life, Ethan hadn't woken up thinking about stock prices, legal battles, or corporate takeovers. He felt a profound, overwhelming sense of peace.

He shifted slightly to pull the silk blanket higher over her shoulders.

That was when he saw it.

On the pristine, pure white sheet beneath her hips lay a faint, delicate stain of fresh blood. Small, distinct, and undeniable.

Ethan froze.

His breath held in his throat. He stared at the red mark on the white fabric, his sharp mind processing the reality of what it meant.

She hadn't just been telling him she was nervous last night. She hadn't just been shy.

She had given him her absolute purity. In a world where everyone lied, traded secrets, and sold their loyalty for power, Maya Sterling had handed him her unblemished, untouchable innocence—trusting him with the most intimate part of her soul.

Something broken and ancient inside Ethan’s chest shattered open.

It wasn't victory. It wasn't possessive pride. It was a crushing, beautiful, terrifying weight of absolute responsibility.

He sat up slowly, keeping his movements silent, looking down at her sleeping face. Her dark hair was scattered across the white pillows; her lips were soft and rosy; her golden skin glowed under the morning light.

For thirty-four years, Ethan Vale had been the most powerful man in every room he walked into. But sitting beside this sleeping woman, looking at the small mark on the sheets, he didn't feel powerful.

He felt entirely, hopelessly undone.

He leaned down, pressing a lingering, reverent kiss against her temple.

"I swear to you, Maya," Ethan whispered into the silent morning air, his voice choked with an emotion he had never named before. "No one will ever make you bleed again. I will tear the world down before I let anything harm you."

Maya stirred softly, her long lashes fluttering open. She blinked against the morning light, her dark eyes finding Ethan’s face. A soft, radiant smile bloomed across her face, completely free of fear, hesitation, or regret.

"Good morning," she murmured, her voice sleepy and warm, reaching up to touch his jaw.

Ethan caught her hand, pressing his lips firmly against her palm, looking into her eyes with a fierce, burning devotion that made her breath catch.

"Good morning, my sweet girl," he said softly. "Today, we finish what your stepmother started."
