Chapter 1 - The Pulse in the DarkThe black Maybach cut through the rain-slicked streets of Manhattan like a shadow.

Inside the quiet cabin, the hum of the twin-turbo engine was overshadowed by the shallow, ragged rhythm of Maya’s breathing. Ethan Vale—a man whose cold precision held multi-billion-dollar markets in place— sat frozen in the back seat, holding the fragile weight of a stranger in his arms.
Her head rested against the lapel of his hand-tailored suit. Her face was deathly pale under the passing streetlights, her dark lashes casting long shadows across her high cheekbones. One of her small, delicate hands remained curled weakly around his wrist, her fingers trembling against his skin.
"Drive faster, Thomas," Ethan commanded, his voice dropping into an icy register that made his veteran chauffeur glance nervously into the rearview mirror.
"We’re two minutes out, Mr. Vale," Thomas replied, stepping harder on the gas as the car wove through midnight traffic toward Mount Sinai Hospital. "I’ve already contacted Dr. Vance. The trauma team is waiting at the private bay."
Ethan didn't look up. His eyes remained fixed on Maya's face.
He didn't know who she was. He didn't know how she had managed to walk into Le Cirque—the most exclusive private dining club in Upper Manhattan—wearing a faded trench coat and carrying an old leather handbag. But when she had collapsed at his feet, shattering the pristine silence of his business dinner, something primal had snapped inside him.
His executive team had stared at him in disbelief as he abandoned a forty-million-dollar acquisition deal to scoop her off the marble floor. Ethan Vale didn't help people. He bought companies, liquidated assets, and lived behind an impenetrable wall of iron control.
Yet here he was, pressing his bare palm gently against her cold cheek, trying to keep her conscious.
"Maya," he murmured, his thumb brushing a soft lock of hair away from her damp forehead. "Stay awake. Talk to me."
Her dark eyes fluttered open slightly, hazy and unfocused with intense pain. "Ethan...?" she rasped, her voice barely more than a breath.
His heart gave a strange, violent thud against his ribs. She knows my name.
"How do you know who I am?" he asked softly, leaning closer.
A faint, bittersweet smile touched her dry, pale lips. "Everyone... knows the king of Manhattan..." she whispered, her breathing catching in a sharp gasp of agony. "It hurts... my side..."
"Hold on," Ethan demanded, his grip on her waist tightening as the car swerved sharply into the ambulance bay of Mount Sinai.
The heavy doors flew open. A team of six ER doctors and nurses swarmed the car, rolling a stainless-steel stretcher directly up to the door.
"Sir, let us take her," the chief emergency physician said, stepping forward.
Ethan didn't move immediately. For a fraction of a second, every protective instinct inside his body screamed against letting go of her. But as he saw the sweat glistening on her pale forehead, he carefully lifted her out of the leather interior and laid her onto the gurney.
As the nurses began hooking up IV lines and heart monitors, Maya’s weak fingers slipped away from his wrist.
"Don't leave..." she whispered into the chaotic rush of the hospital corridor, her eyes pleading through her pain.

Ethan stood in the center of the flashing lights, surrounded by the rush of medical staff. He looked down at his tailored suit—stained with rain and a small spot of blood from where her hand had gripped his coat.
"I'm right here," Ethan said, his powerful voice cutting through the medical noise. He stepped past the security line, falling into stride beside the gurney. "I'm not going anywhere."
