Chapter 4 - The Four PromisesThe weeks that followed transformed the cold, sterile atmosphere of Ethan’s Greenwich estate into something unrecognizable.

Maya’s physical strength returned slowly under the care of specialized nutritionists and physical therapists. The pale, ghost-like girl who had fallen at Ethan’s feet was replaced by a woman of breathtaking beauty. Her dark hair regained its rich, silky luster; her golden skin bloomed with health; and her dark, expressive eyes carried a deep, magnetic warmth that drew Ethan in like a moth to a flame.
Yet, despite her growing physical health, the emotional scars remained deep. She jumped at sudden sounds. She hesitated before eating anything she hadn't seen prepared.
And Ethan changed, too.
The ruthless CEO who used to work twenty hours a day began coming home at 5:00 PM. He canceled international trips. He traded board meetings for quiet walks through the estate’s private gardens with Maya, listening to her talk about her father, her childhood, and her dreams of rebuilding her father’s shipping legacy.
One rainy Friday night, two months after her rescue, the storm outside raged against the floor-to-ceiling glass walls of the penthouse master suite.
Maya stood near the fireplace, wearing a silk midnight-blue robe that Ethan had bought for her. Her hair fell over her shoulders in wild, damp waves.
Ethan stepped into the room, wearing a loose black shirt, holding two glasses of warm herbal tea. He set the glasses down on the table, his dark eyes fixing onto her with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
"You're quiet tonight," Ethan said softly, walking over to stand behind her. The warmth of his tall body radiated against her back.
Maya turned slowly to face him. Her heart was hammering against her ribs, not with fear, but with a sweet, agonizing desire that had been building between them for weeks.
"I was thinking about how much my life changed the moment I fell at your feet," she whispered, looking up into his sharp grey eyes.
Ethan reached out, his thumb gently trailing down the soft line of her jawline. "You didn't fall, Maya. You conquered."
Maya swallowed hard, stepping closer until her chest brushed against his. "Ethan... I want to stop being afraid."
His breath hitched. He knew what she was asking. He could feel the heat radiating from her skin, the sweet scent of jasmine rising from her neck. But he also knew the trauma she had lived through. He knew how fragile her trust was.
He slid his long fingers into her hair, pulling her face up gently. "Maya... if we do this, there is no turning back. I don't share. I don't let go."
"I don't want you to let go," she whispered, her hands trembling as she reached up to unbutton his collar.
He leaned down, his lips brushing against hers in a slow, exquisitely gentle kiss that sent an electric shock straight through her core.
He lifted her easily into his arms, carrying her to the massive king-sized bed adorned with crisp white silk sheets. He laid her down gently, hovering over her like a dark protector, his eyes blazing with a dangerous, dark passion.
Yet, as his hands slid down her waist, untying the silk belt of her robe, Maya suddenly stiffened beneath him. A soft, terrified gasp escaped her lips, her body freezing as a flashback of her captive days flashed across her mind.
Ethan stopped instantly.
He didn't push. He didn't rush. He rested his forehead against hers, his chest heaving, his powerful hands anchoring her gently by the waist.
"The first time," Ethan growled softly into the dark, his voice thick with unbridled desire yet controlled by pure devotion. "I promise you... you are in control. Tell me to stop, and I walk away."
Maya looked into his eyes, seeing the absolute sincerity behind his fierce gaze. The panic vanished, replaced by an overwhelming wave of trust. "Don't walk away," she breathed.
Thirty minutes later, as the passion between them flared again, Ethan’s heavy weight pressed against her, his lips trailing hot kisses down the exposed curve of her neck. As his hand slid lower, brushing against the smooth, untouched skin of her inner thigh, Maya’s breath caught again. She gripped his shoulders, her voice trembling violently in the dark.
“I’ve never done this before,” she whispered, her voice breaking with raw vulnerability. “I’ve never been this close to anyone before.”
Ethan went completely still above her.
Four times in that single, intoxicating night, the sheer intensity of his desire almost drove him to claim her completely. And four times, the trembling innocence in her voice made the untouchable billionaire pause.
Each time, he looked into her eyes, kissed her forehead, and made her a promise.

“Then I’ll make sure you never regret this.”
When he finally brought their bodies together in the deep hours of the night, it was not an act of possession. It was a sacred surrender. He guided her with unbelievable patience, holding her close, turning her fear into pure, transcendent ecstasy until her breathless cries echoed softly against the rain-slicked glass.
