Chapter 2 - The Diagnosis of ShadowsThree hours passed in suffocating silence inside the private executive suite on the ninth floor.

Ethan stood before the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the dark expanse of Central Park. The rain had turned into a gentle mist, blurring the city lights into soft halos of gold and silver.
Behind him, the rhythmic, steady beep... beep... beep of the heart monitor filled the room.
The heavy door creaked open, and Dr. Vance—the chief of surgery—stepped inside, pulling off his surgical mask. His face was solemn, carrying the exhaustion of a three-hour emergency operation.
"How is she?" Ethan asked without turning around, his voice low and dangerous.
"She’s stable, Mr. Vale," Dr. Vance replied, walking over to the side of the bed where Maya lay asleep, hooked up to an IV drip and a fresh blood transfusion. "It was an acute ruptured appendix combined with severe physical exhaustion and malnutrition. If you had brought her in fifteen minutes later... the toxicity would have killed her."
Ethan turned slowly, his sharp grey eyes fixing onto the sleeping woman. "Malnutrition?"
"She hasn't had a proper meal in days, Ethan," Vance said quietly, handing him her medical file. "Her white blood cell count was through the roof. But that isn't the most concerning part."
Ethan took the file, his brows furrowing. "Explain."
Dr. Vance gestured to a secondary lab report attached to the clipboard. "When we ran her routine toxicology screen, we found faint traces of a rare synthetic sedative in her system. Digitalis derivative. It's a compound that mimics natural cardiac distress and extreme fatigue over prolonged exposure."
Ethan’s jaw tightened into a hard, dangerous line. "Someone was poisoning her."
"Slowly, yes," Vance nodded grimly. "Not enough to kill her outright, but enough to make her weak, confused, and physically dependent on medical care. Whoever she was living with was administering it in micro-doses."
Ethan closed the file with a loud snap, the sound echoing through the sterile room.
He walked slowly over to the side of her bed. Without her trench coat, in the soft pastel hospital gown, Maya looked unbelievably fragile. Her skin was smooth and golden, her features breathtakingly pure, completely untouched by the harsh, cynical world Ethan inhabited every day.
He reached down, his large, warm hand gently lifting her small, bruised wrist. The delicate skin bore the faint red marks of old restraints.
"Who are you, Maya?" Ethan whispered to the silent room.
Before Dr. Vance could speak, the suite doors burst open. Two men in dark, expensive suits stepped into the hallway, followed by a middle-aged woman wearing a pearl necklace and a mink coat. Her face was sharp, her eyes cold, carrying the arrogant air of old Manhattan money.
"Where is she?!" the woman demanded, pushing past the hospital security guards who tried to block her path. "Where is Maya Sterling?!"
Ethan stepped away from the bed, his tall, imposing figure instantly filling the center of the room. A wall of pure, unyielding dominance.
"Who allowed you on this floor?" Ethan asked, his voice dropping into a register so cold the temperature in the room seemed to plummet.
The woman stopped dead in her tracks, her dark eyes flashing with recognition as she realized who stood before her.
"Ethan Vale," she spat, recovering her haughty composure, though her hands trembled slightly as she clutched her leather handbag. "I am Victoria Sterling. Maya is my stepdaughter. She ran away from our family estate three days ago during a mental episode. I am here to take her home."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed as he connected the names. Sterling. The Sterling Global Logistics empire—a massive shipping conglomerate currently undergoing a messy, bitter bankruptcy trial after the mysterious death of its founder, Arthur Sterling, eight months ago.
"She isn't going anywhere with you," Ethan said flatly.
Victoria let out a sharp, aristocratic laugh. "Excuse me? You have no legal standing here, Mr. Vale. She is an unstable young woman who belongs under private medical care—our private medical care. Step aside before I call my legal team."
Ethan took a single step forward. He didn't raise his hands, but his presence was so suffocatingly powerful that Victoria’s two bodyguards instinctively reached for their jackets.
"Touch her," Ethan whispered, his eyes flashing like raw steel, "and I will buy Sterling Global by eight o'clock tomorrow morning, liquidate every asset your family owns, and leave you begging on the street. Test me."
Victoria shrank back, her breath hitching in her throat. She knew Ethan Vale wasn't making a dramatic threat. He had the liquidity, the power, and the ruthlessness to destroy her family before lunch.
"This isn't over, Ethan," Victoria hissed, stepping backward toward the door. "She is broken goods. You have no idea what you're getting yourself into."
"Get out," Ethan commanded quietly.

As the heavy doors closed behind the terrified woman, Ethan turned back to the bed.
Maya’s dark eyes were open, filled with tears, watching him from the pillow. She had heard everything.
