Chapter 3 - The Trap at Pier 14By noon the following day, the autumn sun painted the sky over the Boston harbor in harsh, metallic shades of gray and silver.

Inside the high-security executive study on the top floor of the Mercer Shipping Tower at Pier 14, fifty broad-shouldered men in dark suits stood posted along the corridors.

Sitting at the head of a massive mahogany conference table was Victor Mercer—a sixty-five-year-old man with silver hair, sharp features, and a cold, condescending sneer. Surrounding him were six high-ranking syndicate lieutenants and three corporate attorneys.

"Where is my nephew?" Victor demanded sharply, slamming his gold signet ring against the table. "The board meeting began twenty minutes ago! If Adrian does not sign the secondary terminal lease transfers to the Moretti family by one o'clock... I will execute the emergency proxy vote!"

BOOM!

The heavy double mahogany doors of the conference room were thrown open with a sudden, thunderous force that made the brass handles crack against the walls.

The applause of the surrounding lieutenants died instantly into a breathless, terrifying silence.

Walking into the boardroom, wearing an immaculate black three-piece suit, his posture broad, tall, and unyielding, flanked by twenty armed Mercer security operators, was Adrian.

And walking directly beside his right shoulder, wearing an elegant dark velvet dress, holding a sealed black leather dossier, her posture royal, her hazel eyes holding zero fear, was me.

Victor Mercer’s jaw sagged open in total, speech-bound shock. "Adrian...! What is the meaning of this intrusion?! And who the hell is this girl?!"

Adrian didn't yell. He walked slowly across the plush carpet, stopping three feet from his uncle, setting an encrypted tablet flat onto the mahogany table.

"This 'girl', Victor," Adrian spoke, his baritone echoing through the silent room like a rolling wave of thunder, "is Claire Vance—the primary guardian of my daughters and the newly appointed Executive Trustee of the Rebecca Mercer Memorial Foundation."

Victor let out a harsh, bitter scoff, jumping out of his chair. "You're insane! You bring a nanny into a multi-billion-dollar corporate restructuring?! You've completely lost your mind since Rebecca died!"

"I haven't lost my mind, Uncle Victor," Adrian answered softly, his storm-gray eyes burning with a dark, lethal fire. "I just spent twelve months letting you believe I had."
