Chapter 2 - The Oath in the NurseryA cold, terrifying chill swept through my veins.

The fever hadn't been a simple childhood flu. It was the first move in Victor Mercer’s secondary strike to declare Adrian an unfit, grieving father and seize full legal guardianship of six-year-old Lily and Emma.

"Dr. Reynolds..." I stammered, my voice trembling with a mixture of raw fear and burning outrage. "He... he was working for your uncle?"

"He was," Adrian confirmed flatly.

His voice dropped into a low, velvet baritone that held zero hesitation.

"My security team intercepted Reynolds at the front gates thirty minutes ago," Adrian revealed, his storm-gray eyes locking onto mine with an unshakeable, sovereign intensity. "The tainted medication was seized. But Victor now knows his window is closing. As of seven o'clock this morning... I have executed a total lockdown of the Mercer estate."

He stood up slowly from the edge of the bed, his broad frame towering over the mattress, taking off his wrinkled suit jacket and throwing it over a mahogany chair. He unbuttoned his collar, rolling up his sleeves, revealing corded muscle and a dark tattoo of a crest wrapping around his left forearm.

He didn't look like a distant, terrifying boss anymore. He looked like an unbroken father who had finally found the one person he could trust with his life.

"Claire," Adrian spoke, stepping closer until he stood two feet from my side.

"Yes, Mr. Mercer?"

"Starting today, you are no longer just the twins' nanny," Adrian declared, every word dropped into the room with an absolute, unyielding authority. "You are moving into the private guest suite connected directly to this nursery. You will have full executive authority over their diet, their security detail, and their daily schedule. My chief lieutenant, Marco, will report directly to you."

"Mr. Mercer... I'm just a nanny," I protested softly, looking up into his eyes. "I don't have corporate power or political connections—"

"You gave my daughters seven hours of peaceful sleep, Claire," Adrian interrupted gently, reaching out his broad hand, his warm thumb softly, reverently wiping a tear from my cheek. "You gave them the memory of their mother's lullaby. You have more power in this house than any billionaire in Boston."

Lily stirred gently beside me, her small green eyes opening slowly, looking up at her father, then at me.

"Daddy...?" Lily whimpered softly.

May you like

Adrian dropped flat onto his knees beside the bed, pulling Lily and Emma into his broad, strong arms, pressing his face against their soft hair as tears streamed down his carved features.

"I'm right here, my sweet girls," Adrian wept, kissing their foreheads again and again. "Daddy is right here. And Miss Claire is never going away."
