Chapter 4 - The Net TightensThe executive office of the hospital director on the fourth floor of Rosewood Women’s Medical Center was a monument to ego. Floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves, a massive leather executive desk overlooking the Chicago skyline, and framed diplomas from Harvard and Johns Hopkins hung proudly on the walls.

Dr. Michael Carter sat behind his desk, breathing heavily as he stared at his computer monitor.
The screen was flashing a bright, angry crimson banner across every single terminal in the building: SYSTEM LOCKOUT. ASSET FREEZE ORDER ISSUED BY U.S. DISTRICT COURT.
"What is this?" Michael muttered frantically, his fingers flying across his mechanical keyboard. "Damn it! IT support! Get in here!"
He slammed his hand onto his intercom button, but instead of his secretary’s voice, a cold, automated static hiss answered back. His private corporate accounts—linked through Swiss shell companies to finance his lavish lifestyle and his secret apartments downtown—were showing a zero balance. Federal seizure notices were stamped across every digital asset he owned.
"No, no, no..." Michael stood up so fast his leather chair rolled backward and slammed into the bookshelf, sending a crystal decanter of scotch shattering across the hardwood floor.
He lunged for his secure landline phone to call his offshore legal counsel, but before he could pick up the receiver, the heavy mahogany doors of his office were violently kicked open.
BANG!
Three heavily armed federal marshals in tactical gear swarmed into the room, their weapons drawn and leveled squarely at his chest. Right behind them strode Arthur Vance, looking immaculate in his charcoal suit, followed by two uniformed Chicago police detectives.
"Dr. Michael Carter," the lead marshal announced, his voice echoing authoritatively off the high ceilings. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder."
Michael stumbled backward against his desk, his face turning the color of ash. "This is a mistake! Do you know who I am? I am the director of this hospital! I demand to speak to my lawyers—you can't touch me!"
Arthur Vance stepped forward, a cold, predatory smile playing on his lips as he slid a thick federal arrest warrant across the mahogany desk right beside the spilled scotch.
"Oh, we can touch you, Michael," Arthur said smoothly. "In fact, the U.S. Attorney’s office has been admiring your little embezzlement portfolio all morning. But what’s really going to interest the jury is the audio recording we just subpoenaed from your wife’s hospital room—the one where you calmly explained how you were going to murder her on the operating table tomorrow morning."
Michael’s knees buckled. The arrogant, untouchable hospital director vanished in a single second, replaced by a sweating, shivering coward staring into the abyss of his own destruction.
"Margaret..." Michael choked out, the name escaping his lips like a desperate plea. "She... she planned this."
"No, Michael," Arthur replied, stepping closer as the federal marshals grabbed the director by the shoulders and slammed him face-down onto the desk, snapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists. "You planned it. She just helped you execute the punchline."
As Michael was hauled bodily toward the doorway, kicking and screaming obscenities that echoed down the executive hallway, Arthur picked up his encrypted phone and dialed Margaret’s number.
"It’s done, Margaret," Arthur reported smoothly. "The rat is in a cage. And your daughter’s scheduled C-session tomorrow? I’ve personally requisitioned a specialized surgical team from Northwestern Memorial Hospital to take over Rosewood’s obstetrics ward. Your daughter and your grandchild are going to be completely safe."

Margaret, standing outside Suite 402 with her phone pressed to her ear, closed her eyes and let out a long, shuddering breath. The tension that had coiled around her heart for the last two hours finally dissolved.
"Thank you, Arthur," she whispered. "Now, let’s go tell Emily the bad news about her husband—and the wonderful news about her future."
