Chapter 2 - The First Phone CallMargaret stepped out of Suite 402 into the wide, sunlit corridor of the VIP maternity wing. The plush carpeting muffled her footsteps as she walked past nurses' stations where young residents chatted quietly over tablet computers, entirely unaware of the monster operating in their midst.

She walked twenty paces down the hall toward the fire exit alcove, ensuring she was safely out of earshot of the security cameras mounted near the elevators.
With steady, deliberate movements, she pulled an older-model, encrypted satellite smartphone from her handbag—a device she hadn't turned on in three years, left over from her corporate litigation days. She pressed a single speed-dial button.
It rang twice before a deep, gravelly voice answered on the other end.
"If this is a telemarketer, you've reached the wrong number," grunted Arthur Vance, senior partner at Vance, Sterling & Associates and the most feared corporate litigator in Illinois.
"Arthur," Margaret said smoothly. "It’s Margaret Evans."
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line, followed by dead silence for three seconds. Arthur Vance hadn't heard that voice since Margaret had successfully dismantled a hostile corporate takeover of his firm back in 2012, saving his partnership from total ruin.
"Margaret?" Arthur’s voice instantly shifted, losing its casual gruffness and hardening into razor-sharp professional alertness. "Good grief. I thought you were living off grid in the Swiss Alps. Is everything alright? Do you need representation?"
"I need something better than representation, Arthur," Margaret replied, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal hum. "I need an immediate, unannounced forensic audit of Rosewood Women’s Medical Center, specifically targeting capital allocation, pharmaceutical procurement logs, and the personal operating accounts of the hospital director, Dr. Michael Carter."
Arthur whistled softly through his teeth. "Michael Carter? The golden boy of Chicago medicine? Margaret, that man has half the city’s philanthropic board eating out of his hand. What did he do—botch a surgery?"
"Worse," Margaret said, her grip tightening on the encrypted phone until her knuckles turned white. "He’s systematically abusing my daughter, who is currently nine months pregnant and trapped in his VIP maternity ward. He has threatened to kill her on the operating table during her C-section tomorrow morning."
The line went utterly silent. When Arthur spoke again, the professional detachment was entirely gone, replaced by the cold, bloodthirsty fury of a bulldog ready to tear an enemy apart.
"Name your terms, Margaret," Arthur said quietly. "Do we want him disbarred, ruined, or put behind bars for the rest of his natural life?"
"All three," Margaret answered without a fraction of hesitation. "And Arthur? I want you to coordinate with the U.S. Attorney’s office. I happen to know Michael has been funneled kickbacks through a shell company called Apex Medical Supply. Get the federal marshals down to Rosewood Hospital within the hour. Freeze every single corporate account connected to his name before he realizes the trap has closed."
"Consider it done," Arthur replied. "I'm calling the District Attorney right now. Stay inside that hospital, Margaret. Keep your daughter safe. We’re coming in through the front door."
Margaret clicked the phone off, slipping it back into her purse. She turned around to walk back toward Suite 402, only to freeze as she saw Dr. Michael Carter himself striding down the corridor toward her.
He wore a crisp white lab coat over a tailored charcoal suit, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the fluorescent lights. His dark, handsome face wore that trademark charismatic smile that had charmed thousands of patients—and fooled an entire city.

"Margaret!" Michael called out warmly, spreading his arms as if he were genuinely thrilled to see his mother-in-law. "What a wonderful surprise. I didn't know you were joining Emily for her final ultrasound."
Margaret stood her ground, her face a mask of absolute, unreadable serenity as the monster walked straight into her trap.
