Chapter 3 - The Wolf in a Lab CoatMichael stopped two feet away from Margaret, his charm radiating like a well-rehearsed performance. He smelled faintly of expensive cologne and sterile antiseptic—a sickening mix of luxury and clinical coldness.

"How is our little mother-to-be holding up?" Michael asked, adjusting his cuffs with practiced elegance. "Pregnancy can be so taxing on women of her emotional temperament. I hope she isn't giving you too much anxiety with her usual dramatics."

Margaret stared at him. For thirty seconds, she said nothing at all. She simply let her eyes rake over his expensive suit, his pristine lab coat, and the arrogant, self-assured smirk playing at the corners of his mouth.

It was the look of a man who believed he was untouchable—a god in his own private domain.

"She’s resting, Michael," Margaret finally said, her voice smooth and unhurried. "Though I’d imagine she’s feeling a bit bruised. Pregnancy can leave such... unexpected marks, can't it?"

A microscopic twitch rippled across Michael’s jawline. The charming smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he quickly recovered it, though his dark eyes suddenly turned wary.

"I'm not sure what you mean, Margaret," Michael said smoothly, lowering his voice just a notch. "Emily has always been prone to clumsiness. You know how anxious she gets about the delivery. Sometimes she bumps into things at home."

"Oh, of course," Margaret replied, stepping an inch closer to him, her gaze locking onto his with the piercing intensity of a predator staring down a rabbit. "Clumsiness. How careless of her to walk backward into a pair of size-eleven heavy leather work boots."

Michael’s breath hitched. The mask of absolute confidence instantly shattered, replaced by a flash of genuine, cold panic. He stepped back instinctively, his hands curling into tight fists inside his lab coat pockets.

"What are you implying?" Michael hissed, dropping the pleasantries entirely. The polite son-in-law vanished, revealing the vicious, controlling narcissist underneath. "If Emily has been running her mouth to you about household arguments—"

"Household arguments?" Margaret interrupted softly, her voice slicing through the air like a scalpel. "Michael, you didn't have an argument. You assaulted a nine-months-pregnant woman in the home you were supposed to protect her in. And then you threatened to murder her on the operating table."

Michael glanced frantically down the hallway, ensuring no nurses or orderlies were within earshot. He leaned in close, his face twisting into a mask of ugly intimidation.

"Listen to me, you arrogant old bint," Michael whispered, venom dripping from every syllable. "I run this hospital. Every doctor, every nurse, every administrator here answers to me. If I say Emily has pre-eclampsia tomorrow morning during her scheduled C-section, the surgical team will follow my orders to the letter. She’ll go under anesthesia, and she simply won't wake up. And legally? It will be logged as an tragic, unavoidable obstetric embolism."

Margaret didn't flinch. She didn't blink. She merely tilted her head, a faint, chilling smile touching her lips.

"Is that right, Michael?" she asked softly.

"That is exactly right," Michael sneered, his chest puffing up with arrogant authority. "So you can march right into that room, tell your daughter to keep her mouth shut, and smile for the cameras when the press interviews me tomorrow about our successful maternity ward protocols. Because if you try to make a sound—if you even so much as whisper a word to the police—you'll be burying both your daughter and your grandchild before sunset."

He turned on his heel, adjusting his lab coat with a smug, victorious flourish, and strode away down the corridor toward his executive office, completely convinced he had just won.

Margaret watched him walk away. She reached into her handbag again, pulling out her standard personal smartphone.

She tapped the screen and opened her live security feed—a feed linked directly to the hidden micro-cameras Arthur Vance’s technical team had just secretly installed inside the hospital's main administrative servers.

On her screen, Arthur’s voice came through her Bluetooth earpiece, crisp and triumphant.

“Margaret, we’ve just breached the hospital’s financial mainframes. You won't believe what we’re looking at. Michael hasn't just been skimming kickbacks; he’s been laundering millions through bogus pharmaceutical contracts with Apex Medical Supply. His accounts are frozen effective immediately.”

Margaret smiled, her eyes cold as ice.

"That's wonderful, Arthur," she whispered into her phone. "Now, send the federal marshals to his office. Tell them Dr. Carter is wanted for domestic terrorism, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit premeditated murder."
